I can see some interesting adventuring ideas too. :) During the seasonal floods, aboleths and Kuo-toa. During the dry periods, raids into the cavern for treasure.
 

The ecosystem for this has to be incredibly complex. And we're only seeing the surface portion. What the heck is going on below the surface? Surely, something survives down in those lava tubes...

And- me being me- I thought about how cool something like this could be as a setting in a RPG adventure.

"As the downward rush of surface water through the millennia-old lava tubes dwindles and ceases with the arrival of Spring, the long-sodden bull-rushes and tube-worms come out of the muck and start to play Canasta with each other." (or not)
