D&D 5E Disengage Action

In my game, if the foes outnumber the dodger, that's what the underlings do usually.

Oh no, one can't normally grapple on a OA.

I don't have my book in front of me, but is that right? It would be quite interesting from a tactics perspective (and a reason to keep one hand free), if on an OA, you can attempt to grapple as your OA... I cant remember what OA says.

It is less what OA says, it is just that a normal Grapple has to be triggered through the attack action, not just a mere attack. I don't think normal characters can grapple off of an OA in 5E or 4E. That hasn't worked since the 3.5E AKA Grapplers and Grabasses.
When you want to grab a creature or wrestle with it, you can use the Attack action to make a special melee attack, a grapple. If you’re able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them.

Now if a monster has a melee attack that causes grapple, that can still happen.

Hmm on my reading (got my book now), an OA lets you make a melee attack. Then grapple is referred to as a special melee attack. I would allow it. I would also allow a shove or trip too. All makes sense to me, or at least I see no good reason not to allow such.

Take a look at minatureHoarder's qouted text. Specifically says you have to use an attack action. OAs are not part of an attack action.

Ah even if that's right, it's close enough for me. I see only good things by allowing it.

Yeah, if a player at my table said "I drop my sword and try to grab him!" as part of an OA there is no way that I would say no. I might make it cost him something though (maybe let the target or some other combatant make an OA...)
