Remorhaz - Huh?

Is it just me or does this creature seem way too good for CR 7? +23 grapple check, improved grab, and a swallow whole that deals an average of 49 points per round with no save? Not to mention its ability to deal 8d6 damage to unarmed characters and destroy weapons. Yikes.

I've never used one of these. Is there something glaring I'm missing that makes this creature on par with its CR? Lower hp, maybe?

It's a tough opponent, to be sure, but I'd rather face one of those than a black pudding or medusa at the same CR.

Its lack of spell resistance and energy resistances, coupled with relatively poor Reflex and Will saves, makes it a relatively easy victim for spellcasters. And since it can't fly and has no ranged attacks, a flying spellcaster can have a field day with it.

Watch out, though, if you do not have a flying spellcaster and are used to beating on things with physical attacks. I have run one of these, and it was a damn good fight, if fairly devastating for the fighter. The poor guy got plucked off his warhorse, though managed not to get swallowed. He also lost 2 weapons (both magical) to the creature before it fell.

Challenge Rating should have a disclaimer

"Only good in a vacume against 1 fighter, 1 wizard, 1 cleric, 1 rogue. the designer's are in no way responsible if you deviate from this platform"

Uhm, would not the warhorse have been a more appetizing target to the remorhaz in the first place?

This thread's nine years old, so it's unlikely you'll get a response from the person you're quoting, especially as Dhaga's history says he hasn't posted anything on Enworld for over two years!

As for your answer, I'd think it's reasonable for a hungry Remorhaz to attack the warhorse, but if it has experience fighting humanoid adventurers it might want to eliminate the greater threat they represent first.

Third edition Remorhaz have Intelligence 5, so they're presumably more cunning than ordinary animals with Int 1 or 2.

Thread necromancy FTW!

Yup, raising old threads from the dead shows that Necromancy's the magical gift that keeps on giving! :p

...and I've just noticed an apostrophe error in my previous post that can not be abided.

Must.. correct... typo...
