D&D 5E Warlord as prestige class?

Blue

With prestige classes recently being unveiled, what's the thoughts on a Warlord as a prestige class instead of a 20 level core class?

One of the benefits I can see is being able to customize it how you want - THIS warlord is based on a bard of valor and plays a lot differently then THAT warlord based on a battlemaster fighter, whom are both different than ANOTHER with levels of in cleric of the god of tactics whom picked it up or the beastmaster/warlord who inspires and protects his animal companion (and occasionally his 2-legged companions as well).

Is this worth exploring? How would you do it? Caster or not?

Do not want.

Do not want a warlord, or do not want warlord as a prestige class? Or do not want prestige classes, though that cat is kinda out of the bag.

More detail would help shape the discourse, including what you see as a bad fit.

Do not want as a prestige class.

That would be an interesting game, with a master 20 (or whatever) long proficiency and caster progression table, and then a bunch of 3, 5, 10 level classes. So you can't be a "wizard" the whole way through, eventually you will need to specialize.

I think a challenge there is getting class features that are rather uninspiring at your character level. "I'm an 18th level character, but my SomeClass 2 feature gives me a +2 to damage once per short rest." Maybe linking things like that to proficiency bonus (like Expertise) or character level (like cantrips) might get rid of that, but then it becomes ripe for cherry picking. So maybe a mix of things like that plus per-class currency like sorcerers have Sorcery Points and battlemasters get bigger (and more) dice.

Hmmmmm...

That's not a bad idea.

Along with the other approaches I'm putting together (dedicated class, reworked Battle Master, reworked Valor Bard, and Warlord features as Feats), I think I might just make a Prestige Class also.

That might be an awesome way to introduce the class to 5E. That way any class can be a Warlord; though I'd definitely change the name.

Maybe Consular or something like that... (or Consigliere...:p)

But, absolutely no spell-casting!!!:)

I like your ideas about multiple approaches.

This I dither on. If I was doing a Warlord class it would have absolutely no casting. But if I'm doing a Warlord PrC, Valor Bard is one of my two biggest customers. Without casting I'd have to make sure it was cool enough to not only match the bard's class features but also however many missing levels of casting taken off the top.

I'm cool with it working with a casting class.

Alternative universe (5e has no sorcerer class)
