*sigh* Someone want to find and post the "on the cover" copy from the DMG for Saelorn? I don't feel like pulling mine out and typing it. But yes, that "undead thing" is Acererak, a.k.a. THE D&D lich.

Acererak "had a write up" in 1978. Was called "Tomb of Horrors." Also got to be the introductory poster-child for an entirely new monster, the demi-lich, which then had another/it's own write up in the MM2. Soooo..."Vecna got a write up in 3e" is...cute. Good for him. Prior to that, he was an eye and a hand (and, for some, a head). But he's still a second fiddle that WotC has overblown.

Tomb of Horrors is an adventure module. You would only ever see this Acererak if you played modules and happened to play this specific module long enough to meet the guy. That's a tiny, minuscule sub-set of current players.

He was in the core rulebook from a significantly more-recent edition. If you played D&D between 2000 and 2008, then you know exactly who Vecna is. That's a significantly larger sub-set of current players.

A lot of the options on this list have the problem that they're only familiar if you've read (or played) one specific book, because regardless of how cool they may be in that book, they don't show up anywhere else. Vecna doesn't have that problem. He existed as artifacts back in the day, he had his own series of modules after that, and he made it into the most influential RPG book of this millennium. He is the lich that people have heard of! Even people who don't play D&D, if they play other RPGs, have heard of him.

Some undead thing is on the cover of the DMG; I didn't see a name anywhere. Vecna had a write-up in the 3E PHB.

Just before the table of contents.

"ON THE COVER
Tyler Jacobson illustrates Acererak as he raises an army of undead and prepares to unleash it on an unsuspecting world."
