As they say, speak for yourself. :shrug: IME most names of things that don't make sense under inspection don't even get noticed the vast majority of people, and only ever seem weird or funny if you point it out to them.

2. Just because a chromatic dragon can't shapechange natively doesn't mean they can't transform at all. The older ones still have access to true polymorph, after all.

Not just from the MM spellcasting sidebar they don't. They would have to have a CR of 27 or higher to have access to 9th level spells.

I must've misread. For some reason I had it in my head spell scaling for Dragon CR was the same as full caster scaling, only round down instead of up.
