D&D 5E Ioun Stone(Reserve) and Warlocks

If a character with at least 7 Warlock levels comes upon an Ioun Stone(Reserve), are they unable to store spells in it? DMs, do you allow the Warlock to essentially "downgrade" one of their Pact Magic spell slots to a level that would fit in the stone? Or is the Warlock just SOL?

By RAW, it appears SOL, but I suspect that most DMs would allow the Warlock to use the Spell Slots as lower level.
My answer as well.

Same principle applies to deep gnome spell gems (as awarded by and described in Out of the Abyss).

It does not seem Rules As Intended at all to go "no, you can only cast level 5 spells, a level 3 spell gem is worthless to you".

I should add that obviously the spell you want to store needs to be castable at the lower level.

That is, you can only downgrade a low-level spell. It's not so much that you downgrade the spell as you manage to not upgrade it per usual Warlock rules.

That would be my assumption if the DM house-ruled it, that the spell being stored would have to fit at its native level.

Seems very reasonable to me.

I would argue the Warlock can use it at any legal level, just as other casters. If desired, a wizard could cast a level 3 Magic Missile into the Ioun Stone, so I see no reason why a Warlock couldn't choose which level to store it as well (rather than being forced to use the native level).

No that's not the issue.

We're not discussing overleveling, we're discussing underleveling.

The Warlock normally MUST uplevel the magic missile to fifth spell level.

The question is: can he NOT do that if he has a first level spell gem or similar?

I've looked into this. I had a PC Bar/War in SKT who got the ring version at 5th when she could use it, then had to make hard choices later on when she became a 7th level warlock.

The answer is: no, the warlock cannot pretend that his 4th/5th level slots are 3rd or less.

Check out all the rules on slots and how they relate to casting spells. When you cast a 1st level spell using a 5th level slot then that spell is a 5th level spell.

A 7th level warlock doesn't have any 3rd level slots. He can't cast spells into the Ioun Stone using his warlock slots.

That's the RAW. You can houserule it differently, and it may be a very reasonable houserule to make, but you didn't post this thread to ask if you can houserule it. :D
