How do you tell a story about a long but peaceful investigation followed by a life-and-death fight, when attrition is required for a life-and-death fight to happen?
I agree, that's tough. A couple of possibilities:

1. Make the life-or-death fight a long one: the big bad is holed up somewhere, and the party has to fight waves of smaller enemies and mini-bosses in order to get to him. Preferably with a time limit.

2. If it's more or less the only fight of the campaign, announce at the start that you'll be using some of the more deadly rules: variant resting, dead at 0 hp, etc.
