What's the connection between heavy metal and early roleplaying?

Having grown up in the early 80s and played D&D at the time...not all D&D players listened to metal...but we certainly weren't slaying orcs to the croonings of Lionel Ritchie.

Speak for yourself. I was a Disco fan then... Blondie, Abba, Prince, Lionel Ritchie... I didn't even start to like metal until the 90's.

Tho' I tended not to RP with music going, ever. Still don't.

Back in the 1990s, Gwar had a booth at Gen Con at least one year. I'm pretty sure they were there in 1998, but I don't recall other years for certain.

I know in Australia, getting an influx of British WH and American D&D almost on par in the 80s, I saw alot of British Heavy metal bands actively promoting their association with RP products & art. I saw and heard of, many RP groups using Heavy metal as background music for combat, it gives that swords hitting shields feel, Likely I'd guess, if a large number of your fans are wearing D&D shirts to your concerts, you'd latch onto that and involve more of their interests in your music.
