D&D 5E Why FR Is "Hated"

AND ALL DMS MUST FOLLOW CANON OR BE DESTROYED!
Everyone can ignore as much canon as one likes, it doesn't make it any less canon. If the novel Death of the Dragon says that Azoun dies, it's canon. All future supplements dealing with Cormyr's royalty will acknowledge this event. You're free to ignore that for your games, it just requires some extra work refit all future references to the status of Cormyr to your personal timeline where Azoun still lives and rules.
I read “Spellfire” when it first came out. It is the first time I agreed with my wife that a lot of spin off novels are JUNK FICTION. It read like someone wrote a bad novel about his Monty hall pc.
Still doesn't make it less canon. It's events are referenced all over whenever a supplement talks about spellfire.

I never hated the Realms, actually looked forward to discovering more about the setting, but... ended up tiring of it - quickly.
i.m.o. WotC did a disservice to all the settings with 5e, though I understand how they came to where they are at.

I started playing D&D with 5e after being introduced to Eberron's Xendrik, through DDO.
For some reason I thought that Eberron was the default world, and found out quickly its the multiverse, which is cooler.
At least, that is how I interpreted, incorrectly, the DMG! ;)

PoTA was my first campaign, and it gave minimum suggestions for where to place it in Eberron.
Not knowing about the world past DDO and Keiths, 300+ page blog, (the latter came later), I was at a loss with converting PotA properly, so played Realms - until the elemental campaign lent itself easily to the development of lightning rails, at 15th level, in Red Larch. (Town grew...) :)

I really wanted Eberron setting material, not 3.5 - and waited, and waited.
Thought it would come at various points, and now its clear 5e is Realms.
All other material is being poured into the Realms, from Greyhawk, etc.

Eberrons cosmology is truly awesome - but kinda doesnt fit 5e anymore.
They would have had to have started with Eberron - which many fans are happy they didnt, as they would prefer Keith having complete control in the DMsGuild.

Having said that, its the reason Realms was not that interesting.
Only had SCAG... even then, no Baldurs Gate - really not into the cold north.

WotC would have new people buy 3.5 as veterans of the game would not appreciate repeat material...
... Thats where they messed up, years ago - settings should have been edition neutral like Elminsters guide.

A new player does not want 3.5 stats, etc.
So many cool feats, trying to figure out how to use them without breaking the game, etc.

The 'hate' is probably really based on the above.
I would not mind seeing their multiverse - updated to 5e.

They could update the old books as they are .pdfs.

Thats one other thing... try getting hardback copies of Eberron. :p
Or Realms... tons of realms books I would gladly get. :)

Realms is how they started 5e to be safe - the fans were the tender that ignited the flame that WotCs hollywood crowd is stoking, and it can be any setting. New people got on board because exposure, not because the Realms is necessarily that interesting... not saying its not, but every adventure that has come out could easily fit in another setting, like Eberron, etc.

Oh absolutely. Having Elminster show up and throw around some 9th level spells to fix things sucks.

Hmmm, perhaps this is a way to get players to keep pressing instead ahead instead of resting all the time. Everytime the PCs rest roll on the Random Monster Table:

d20
1-5: Level appropriate random monsters
6-10: Roll on Subtable 1 to determine which UBER NPC comes in and saves the day, taking all the Loot/XP.

Subtable 1
1: Drizzt
2: Elminster
3: Minsc and Boo
...
1000: Jarlaxle

11-20: Roll on Subtable 1 to determine which UBER NPC comes in, thinks they saved the day, but really unleashes a massive new problem. Roll on Subtable 2 to determine which AP you are now playing (if result is the current AP, roll to determine which chapter you are now in).

Subtable 2
1: Storm King’s Thunder
2: Out of the Abyss
3: The Rise of Tiamat
4: Hoard of the Dragon Queen
5: Princes of the Apocalyse
6: Tomb of Annihilation

One of my guilty pleasures is binge-watching the CW shows (shhhh.... don't hate me). So since Netflix released the most recent seasons of the Arrowverse shows as well the 100, I have been trapped in an infinite loop of snarky, "Oh noes, Canada again" comments.
Yeah. I love Supernatural, which is (was?) filmed there. They've had cases in Sioux City, Cedar Rapids, Sioux Falls, and Saint Louis -- all towns in which I've spent considerable amount of time and all of which have some architectural norms in them (at least a range). St. Louis is the only one that might have happened, there. The others are somewhat... mis-characterized. It's not outside of my ability to suspend disbelief (nowhere close), but it is humorous.

Wasn't there a grand history of the realms book released? Pretty sure that would be the canon timeline for the official realms. With each independent game running it differently as their characters interact with the world, each home game version of the realms is going to be different.

Oh absolutely. Having Elminster show up and throw around some 9th level spells to fix things sucks. But it is poor storytelling to introduce a person that is capable of saving the world easily, and then asking you to do it because they can't be bothered. Or in the case of published adventures, the authors just ignoring the issue and letting the DM answer the question if the players ask.

I've never read any of the Elminster books, so I don't know how easily he saves the world. I'm only passing familiar with them by hearing secondhand accounts online. But each setting has these uber-powerful characters....I think the perception is that Elminster is so front and center to the Realms as opposed to other settings and characters.

And that's nice for you. But it shouldn't even be necessary. These are people that make D&D adventures as a job. This is something that a lot of people do for free because it is fun, and they are getting paid for it. A little bit of thought about what the great and powerful are doing during the Adventure Paths isn't too much to ask.

I think they have put a lot of thought into it. I think that, in their 5th Edition products, they've decided to downplay powerful NPCs in favor of the PCs being the heroes of the stories.

I would say that perhaps one of the big issues might be the fact that each edition of the game has had its own approach to the Realms. So as the setting that's been present for each edition, it's been the most affected by this.
