Starfinder [Arcanum of the Stars] "Dragonstarfinder"

Okay so here's a thought on a Starfinder Fetchling:

+2 Dex, +2 Cha, -2 Wis
4 HP
Low-Light Vision
Darkvision 60'
Skilled: +2 Stealth, and (the original material gives Knowledge: Planes, but I'm thinking Bluff might work better here?)
Shadow Blending: Concealment from dim light gives 50% miss chance instead of 20%
Light Blindness

Removed the energy resistances, because those are very powerful in Starfinder. Removed the Spell Like Abilities because I think they're kind of ancillary to the theme of the race. I think of all the Fetchling traits, the Shadow Blending 'feels' the most Fetchlingy, if that makes sense. It really solidifies that whole 'one with shadow' thing they have going.

In comparison with the drow, they give up the bonus to save vs Enchantment and immunity to magic sleep, the bonus to Perception, the spell-like abilities...in exchange for a bump to some skills, a buff to their defenses while in dim light, and low-light vision.
It looks good to me.

Hmm, looking at the Starfarer Wizard, the # of high-level spell slots is a lot lower that I would expect. With my mana system, the character would get 26 mana points compared to the beguiler's 72. And with the other wish-based system, the sacrificing of 4th- through 6th-level spell slots would yield even less spell magic. Still, it might balance more with the SF classes.

Seems like a big part of how they're balancing high level magic is with the dramatically smaller spell list too. Which does make sense. That's definitely something the Beguiler class would need a lot of revision on.

One thing I'm fiddling with right now is building the Beguiler as a kind of Operative/Spellcaster class, in the same vein that the Technomancer is a Mechanic/Spellcaster class. Following a similar standard 'pattern' of abilities as a normal core class in Starfinder.

This is not to try to usurp any work you're doing or plan to do with Legacy class adaptation, but rather as an exercise for myself, and perhaps a fallback position in case other adaptations just don't work out.
No worries. Anything that helps this go faster is fine with me.

One interesting thing I've already noted is that the Starfinder spell lists have a fair amount of wiggle room in them, as far as spell levels go. They work kind of like the bard lists in Pathfinder. The 5th level spells for example, have a few 4th and 6th level spells mixed in. The 6th level spells occupy a range of 5th-7th level. All compared to the sorceror-wizard list, of course.

So there's room in building a Beguiler spell list for some flexibility in that vein as well.
While I haven't looked through the spell lists yet, I'm not surprised. In truth, if there is a SF spell with the same name (or concept) as a PF spell, we should use those spells first. It sounds like wish was the only 8th- or 9th-level spell that made it into SF, so we need to watch how many of those high-level PF spells we use for Realmsian Dragonstar.

Another option is simply to cut out all 7th- to 9th-level PF spells for all spellcasting classes until we find out what new spells are going to be in the Pact Worlds sourcebook.

Traffic must be really heavy to the SF 3PPs web site. It keeps timing out on me. Heh. :p

Regardless, I've updated the classes list to take into account the Starfarer classes on that site. The book is a "must have" for me now. :D

Agreed. Feel up to tackling it?

Yeah, think so.

I think we'll make our lives a looooooooooooot easier if we look at the spell list for the Beguiler with the 'knows all spells' option. It's a much smaller, more compact list. We'll still need to make cuts, but a lot of the work has already been done for us.

So! A rough draft, in which I'm just going to pick spells out of the SF book and the website that match the spell list in the Beguiler article as closely as possible. Spells to be adapted over and added are not addressed here:

[sblock=0 Level] Dancing Lights, Daze, Detect magic, Ghost Sound, Telepathic Message [/sblock]
[sblock=1 Level] Alarm, Charm Person, Comprehend Languages, Detect Thoughts, Disguise Self, Expeditiousness, Holographic Image, Identify, Lesser Confusion, Ventriloquism[/sblock]
[sblock=2 Level] Daze Monster, Hold Person, Holographic Image, Invisibility, Knock, Mirror Image, See Invisible, Spider Climb[/sblock]
[sblock=3 Level] Arcane Sight, Charm Monster, Clairaudience/Voyance, Deep Slumber, Dispel Magic, Displacement, Euphoric Cloud, Haste, Holographic Image, Nondetection, Reflective Hideaway, Slow, Suggestion, Tongues, Web[/sblock]
[sblock=4 Level] Arcane Eye, Confusion, Hold Monster, Holographic Image, Greater Invisibility, Detect Observation, Mind Probe, Nightcloak, Secret Text, Sending, Telepathic Bond[/sblock]
[sblock=5 Level] Break Enchantment, Dominate Person, Feeblemind, Greater Dispel Magic, Holographic Image, Holographic Terrain, Mislead, Modify Memory, Passwall, Private Sanctum, Prying Eyes, Freedom of Movement, Hostile Juxtaposition[/sblock]
[sblock=6 Level] Ethereal Jaunt, Holographic Image, Mass Invisibility, Shadow Walk, Shadowy Fleet, True Seeing, Veil, Getaway[/sblock]

I played with that site a little while the companion was on my "must have" list. I still use that site so I don't have to lose my page in the file while I make things. I haven't said much about the Beguiler since I don't know the original class at all, and Soumral isn't one. Speaking of Soumral, if I were to make her using purely Starfinder classes she'd be an Operative with the Ghost Specialization as that fits my concept for her the closest. I'll hold up on doing any reworking until you give the go ahead.

I say go ahead. Just limit her equipment to low-tech options, as she is a Outlands PC. There should be enough equipment in the SFCR for your PC to use, regardless.

I'm actually interested in seeing what you come up with. If low-tech/no tech PCs can be put together, then SF will work for my Time of Ages Steampunk Spelljammer setting too, as well as Gamma World. (Ideas I'm already considering.) Do you have a PF version of your Shadowthorne PrC? Or maybe you can come up with a Shadowthorne theme. :)
