D&D 5E No Magic Shops!

I agree, but I read here enough whim about missing materials or rules balance.
But there is also in this forum plenty of solutions about making the game your game.
You can wait for the official sane magic item price list, revised ranger, sharp shooter nerf.
Or you can home brew your game now.
It is in the first chapter of the dm guide. A world of your own.

I don't read anything patronizing into what's being said there. It just boils down to "it's a kitbasher's edition, so go ahead and kitbash".

And so sentences from various texts are cherry-picked to divine deeper meaning into the world around us. This is almost ... religious.

First, it's not "cherry picked". It's the freaking rule. Second, the logic is unassailable. The default rule is that unless the DM changes things, most magic items are too rare to be bought. That's a fact. Another fact is that the default world is the Forgotten Realms, which includes the Red Wizards. Therefore, the default is that Red Wizards don't run around selling rare magic items to the PCs or anyone else. If you don't like that, decide otherwise. Deciding otherwise is part of the rule.

Right. Page 135 of the DMG shows the intention not to have magic shops as the default rule. Unless you decide otherwise for your campaign of course.

What's patronizing about that quote? I've been playing since 1983 and I during that entire time I've noted that players get exited about magic items in a similar way to how kids react to Christmas gifts. It's a comparison of excitement levels. Nothing more.

Xanathar's isn't an adventure and the optional downtime rules in a supplement are both not a magic mart and not a core part of 5e (or FR).

Note, I've never been of the mind that "magic mart"=physical store that you walk into and purchase off the rack magic items. 3e NEVER actually had magic marts like this. Not really. What it said was that you had X GP limit in a settlement of Y size and that anything under the GP limit was available to be purchased. That's it.

IOW, pretty much exactly the way Xanathar's does it except that Xanathar's puts and extra (random) spin on what is available. Cool. Means that you can't game the system by getting your "best" magic items and ignoring the rest. It's, IMO, a better way of doing it. Yes, you can buy magic items, but, you cannot control what is available for purchase.

Which meant that my cleric recently purchased a Staff of the Serpent. Now, this is a magic item that I would NEVER have thought to buy. But, it has become a really central part of the character as I keep finding ways of using it other than just in combat. Very, very cool.

But, as to "magic marts being core to 5e" goes, who is arguing that? That's flat out not true. I'm not seeing anyone arguing otherwise.

You're only trying to invalidate other playing styles than your own.

Doesn't Tomb of Annihilation actually have magic shops?

(In the sense of assorted merchant princes do sell magic consumables, weapons etc. )
Its not a build-to-order, whatever properties you want on whatever weapon you want that was sometimes used for 3e, but it is people selling magic items as a commercial venture.
