D&D 5E WotC asks "If you could create one D&D subclass, what would it be and what would it do?

Y’all are missing the boat here. The subclass to wish for is a subclass with the ability to create more subclasses.

I'd make the Scout subclass of Fighter and it would look like the Fighter/Scout UA we already have. It was a simple subclass but it did what it set out to do quite well. I quite liked the idea of using superiority dice on ability checks.

Enough with the endless subclasses already!

How about some options to enrich existing characters for a change...?

well, with multi-classing adding new sub-classes does open opportunities for existing classes who can multiclass into other classes.

Now sure, more feats, more magic items, more spells and so on all work to expanding existing characters as well and it is a shame no new products with those have been... oh wait...

Ok so was there something specific you were looking for that is not one of the things which we have seen more of?

I'd say 90% of the crunch you multiclass to get is from the core class, not subclasses. So the added complexity from multiclassing into a new subclass is weak at best.

We just received a boatload of new spells and feats in Xanathar. That counts as support to existing characters, right? Or do you have something else in mind?

The Sorcerer and the Warlock should have been one class to begin with, every "power source" that works for the Warlock would also work for the Sorcerer. And after the Divine Soul/Celestial Pact planted their heels into the Clerics Foot, there is no reason to worry about stepping on toes now.

As for me: I want a Plant Druid, Archer Paladin, Thug (Str based) Rogue, and a Wizard subclass that not-so-smart people can play to feel smart.

I’ve rarley disagreed more with a statement about DnD. IMO, while most of their “power sources” could easily be shared (Dragon is patron, fiendish bloodline, etc) the similarity literally ends there, and isn’t close to enough to combine into a single class.

I like your subclass ideas, though.

For me, I want:

Acrobat rogue (already being done, tho I wish he would include being able to Sneak Attack with a quarter staff or spear into it)

Shadowfel related patron (or even just bring back the Raven Queen patron) for Warlock

Primal Spirits/Ancients Warlock Patron (gets some Druid/ranger spells, ability to call forth some spirits, etc)

Sohei Monk (another weapon focused Monk subclass, but this one can use polearms, and isn’t super boring.

Bard College of The Fey Beast Tamer (chain pact bard meets beast master bard. Cast Find Familiar with some special options like Winter Wolf pup, Owlbear cub, Blink Dog Pup, Displacer Beast cub, etc, use it at 2nd or 4th level to go from cub to adolescent to adult version, with some abilities to spend Bardic Inspiration to do cool things through the pet, and/or burn spell slots to activate useful auras centered on the pet. And the pet gains proficiency in Performance.

The devs don't seem to want to mass produce magical items, spells, or feats. That pretty much leaves prestige classes as a way to "enrich exisiting characters", and by all accounts, the 5e gaming community soundly rejected them.

There is one other thing: they could offer an optional rule that lets you do something like paragon paths from 4e, say when you hit 10th level, you can do pick some boon for either class, background, or race (or maybe this is a good place to put that "get turned into a medusa" curse).

Sacred Fist, either as a Cleric or Monk sub-class. As a Cleric it would give up armor proficiencies for Unarmored Defense and Unarmed Attacks. As a Monk it could be a 1/3 caster option like an Eldritch Knight or an Arcane Trickster. There might even be potential as a Paladin sub-class.

I suppose that an Arcane Fist might be interesting too.

Also this, for sure. I’d want to go more Eldritch Fist with Warlock stuff, but I’d settle for wizardry.
