Half-Elf (Eladrin) Variant as per SCAG?

Given the untraditional Racial Ability of the Eladrin, how would you create a Half-Elf (Eladrin)?? All I can come up with is nicking Keen Senses entirely and limiting the Seasonal choices to a set 2/4, like an Equinox/Solstice split. Any advice would be handy!

I probably wouldn't do it, but if you choose to, I would limit it to only having 1 season. Whichever they were born into is what they have, no changing.

In our campaign the half-elf eladrin gets fey step (misty step spell) once per short or long rest instead of 2 skills from versatile.
I definitely wouldn't give them that. That's the only ability they have, and pretty much the only reason to play an eladrin. Giving it to a half elf just seems wrong.

The other option, given the tight connection the Eladrin have to the Feywild to define their extra elvishness, is to simply rule that a child of an eladrin and a human is a standard half-elf; their human blood obviates the extra planar “gift” and treats the child’s elvish blood as material. There might be some traits that call back to his/her (in physical appearance or in seasonal mood), but there wouldn’t be the spark of fey magic to treat the child differently than a different half-elf on paper (although I’d be apt to let the player of said half-elf take Sylvan as their extra language).

I'd give them misty step and probably wouldn't give them any of the eladrin's level 3 seasonal abilities. Anything to do with the eladrin's changing seasons would be flavour such as their hair changing colour to match the seasons.

half eladrin
• +2 Charisma scores
• +1 to any two ability scores
• Misty Step
• Charm save advantage
• proficiency two skills
• trance, sleep immunity

Essentially, this half eladrin swaps darkvision for misty step. Alternatively, one of the +1s to a score could be swapped for it. This misty step lacks a seasonal effect, if wanted maybe swap the Charm save advantage for it.

Why does he have trance?

You are right about trance. My mistake. I had the elf in mind. But I was also thinking trance has fey flavor, and so it seemed to fit.

With regard to languages, you can probably swap the extra language for trance. Both are situational and depend on the setting and narrative to be useful. Then again, it might make sense if the half eladrin speaks three languages: Elven, Sylvan, and Common. But then swap one of the skill proficiencies if keeping trance.

No, I don't think half eladrin would even exist story wise. If the High Elves, the most arrogant race in the prime material plane think their arrogant, what makes you think humans even have a chance with them. Second, half elves should never have trance. Trance should strictly be an elf ability. Simply because trance ties into the whole life death and rebirth of elven souls. Half elves don't have elven souls. They have human souls which is why they need to sleep. I don't like the side bar of the half-soul theory, because if that was the case, every half elf born, means another elf soul is doomed to never see Arvandor again. But of course it's your game, do what you want.
