How fast is a bullet?

I was being silly. It's what I do.
It's a take on the which is heavier; a pound of feathers or a pound of brick. Which would fall faster? They should fall at the same rate.

Length of the barrel also plays a big factor. There are a number of rifles that are chambered for larger pistol ammo (.357 and .45 LC) and they have a good deal more velocity when shot from one of those.

How does that work? The velocity of the round primarily depends on the size of the charge. Putting the same round in a longer barrel should not increase velocity. It will be a lot more accurate due to spin from the longer rifled barrel. But it wouldn’t increase velocity.

Obviously the .22 LR is going to have less powder in the casing (and thus be slower) than the 5.56 mm NATO round, despite the fact that the bullet itself is virtually identical in size (only .003 of an inch difference in diameter).

Now, the NATO round does typically move much faster. No argument. But your stated reason was, unfortunately, specious. They are nearly identical in *diameter*. But since they aren't spherical, that isn't clearly meaningful.

The .22LR bullet is typically between 2 and 2.6 grams. The 5.56 NATO bullet is typically 3.5 to 4.1 grams - so the NATO round is 1.5x to 2x heavier. But the NATO casing packs *so much more* propellant that even with its greater mass, it may still have twice the muzzle velocity.

But, all this is minor, compared to the real answer to the starting question:

A bullet is slightly slower than Superman.

How fast is a bullet? the slowest bullet is faster then I am. So that should narrow down the rang of possibility to faster then me and slower then superman.
