The current situation is much more favorable in my opinion. Both Critical Role and WOTC are riding upon each other to create a synergistic explosion of creativity and cooperation, such that there is more freedom given to third party content creators. As consumers, we stand to benefit a great deal from an ongoing and trusting partnership between Critical Role and WOTC.
If Critical Role pulls another Pathfinder on WOTC, it might make them seriously gun shy in the future to the point where overly controlling access to the game hinders third party content creators. Even Critical Role itself might be similarly gun shy, since it pulled the exact same tactic on WOTC to establish itself. And as a whole, the entire hobby could be weakened.
