Critical Role Could Critical Role launch their own RPG?

The current situation is much more favorable in my opinion. Both Critical Role and WOTC are riding upon each other to create a synergistic explosion of creativity and cooperation, such that there is more freedom given to third party content creators. As consumers, we stand to benefit a great deal from an ongoing and trusting partnership between Critical Role and WOTC.

If Critical Role pulls another Pathfinder on WOTC, it might make them seriously gun shy in the future to the point where overly controlling access to the game hinders third party content creators. Even Critical Role itself might be similarly gun shy, since it pulled the exact same tactic on WOTC to establish itself. And as a whole, the entire hobby could be weakened. :erm:

They could, but why? They could also put out SRD compliant accesories and it would be an easier sell to their gamer audience that have already invested in 5e and CR's own setting book (and not have to do the work of creating a new system). Heck, they could put out SRD & PRD compliant material and capture both 5e & Pathfinder fans.

I think if they went over to playing a homebrew it would hurt both Critical Role and D&D. Both would make less money. Sales of the homebrew system would not make up for loss of viewers.

Currently there is a beneficial synergy and they would be wise to stick with what they're doing.

I feel like if there was even a sniff of this brewing, WotC would head it off at the pass with some sort of counter-offer involving a large purse of moneys in order to stay with D&D 5e...all behind the scenes of course

They could, sure, and I think it would be successful.

I just don't think they'd want to. They look like great big D&D fans and they really, really enjoy playing D&D.

There's another point here.

Is it worth it for them? I mean, how much money would they actually make doing so? IOW, what's the point in being top dog in the RPG industry?

Now, if the RPG industry were the size of, say, the TCG industry, then that changes things considerably.

Seems like a good reason to do it then. ;)

They could and it would be successful, but I'm not sure they will. I think there is more money to be made publishing Exandria campaign guides and adventures.

"Where a bunch of us nerdy-ass voice actors used to play Dungeons and Dragons, now we play something else just like it but with rules you may not be familiar with." Just doesn't have the same ring to it.
