A fresh starter set is absolutely needed. LMoP is getting quite old and, despite the praise, is not a great intro to the game IMHO. The Stranger Things set has also not garnered much praise.

What's wrong with it?

Also, I don't see how a starter set can get old, since by definition it's going to be used by people who haven't played the game before.

IMHO it's more an introduction to 5e than it is to D&D. The first encounter, for example, has been described as a potential TPK if DMs don't handle it with kid gloves. There's way too little handholding/guidance (which is why i think it's an introduction to the new edition rather than an introduction to D&D and TTRPG in general).

Many DMs have run it many times over as an introductory adventure. It would be nice to have something fresh for DMs to run (and with some improvements to aid new DMs).

But it's just my opinion of course :)

It almost sounds like it could be an Expert Set to go with the Basic one. Which would essentially bifurcate the D&D product line at this point, which seems an unlikely choice. Maybe it’s just a general play-aid boxed set, with stuff like condition cards, dice, some random tables, and probably an adventure.
