I mostly like the base class, but some abilities such as spell storing item and extra attunement slots should come online much earlier and then scale as you level.

I really dislike that all subclasses have a pet/minion. The alchemist and archivist pets could be optional through infusions, the turrets could be spells and the battlesmith seems like it tries to fit two concepts within the same subclass.

Overall the base class could have its abilities rearranged and it would be fine. The problem is the theme of the subclasses, which is too Eberron-centric and forces you to have a minion.

The Alchemist yes, it's pet is not central to it's features, but the Archivists pet is important to a bunch of features.

But I agree that the Humunculus fits better as an infusion, and I'd even go so far as to say so does the Iron Defender (high level infusion).

The spell storing was done differently in the first version of the class and came online a *lot* sooner. It really allowed the class to do support.

I think that of all of the subclasses, the alchemist is the easiest one to put in other campaigns. It really fits well in Yoon Suin for example, which is vastly different from Eberron. The battle Smith could work with some effort , the archivist I have to think about.

The battlesmith would fit in Zakhara, Lantan, and a few other places. The Artellerist would fit into Imaskar, the Archivist in Mulhorand.

Hmmm... Misc pondering if the artificier advancing thru the dev cycle has ties with not just Ebberon but the techno-infernal flavor of the DnD live stuff?

That's not quite the same - you are talking about fitting withing "regions" vs fittings into a setting. Since FR is a "everything and the kitchen sink" setting, I can see the artificer working *somewhere*....

You can't change cantrips on level-up. You cna only change 1st level spells and above.

Normally with any other class you would be correct. However below is a direct quote from the latest version of the Artificer:

"Cantrips
At 1st level, you know two cantrips of your choice from the artificer spell list below. At higher levels, you learn additional artificer cantrips of your choice, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Artificer table.

When you gain a level in this class, you can replace one of the artificer cantrips you know with another cantrip from the artificer spell list."

I mean, rests happen a helluva lot more than level ups, so I could still see it as useful.

Usefulness is dependent on if you use it or not, am I wrong? The problem is "The Right Cantrip for the Job" doesn't switch as and bonus action so your likely only going to switch when you KNOW one cantrips is better than another for some things... but once you know that, your likely to keep that cantrip on your spell list never needing to swap it out again. Using an ability once per campaign for the cost of an ability I would actually use every session is a great lose.

"Wand Prototype" adds a cantrip giving more choices but that means I need to switch them out even less. So while the SEEM to play off each other but actually it provides another option which means I fallout my 1-3 cantrip want list and have no need to change it out. I very rarely need more than a few cantrips.

My point is in an entire campaign I might have thought, I wish I hand cantrip X instead of cantrip Y, 1 or 2 times and when I did, would have needed to be able to switch as a bonus action, right then to use it as needed. So if "The Right Cantrip for the Job" was once a once a day bonus action, then action to cast ability... it would be awesome. Since it requires a minimum of 1 hour undisturbed before the moment what you need to cast it, I am just keeping a solid base list and ignoring it. Its currently a very limited use or simply unneeded ability. It fails to make me want to change cantrips all the time as intended an really I would just prefer "Wand Prototype" or one more static cantrips over the currently ability.

The subclasses are fun but the base class is really boring to me. You get free magic items... just more of the stuff everyone gets.

I liked the last version were they had a sneak attack damage progression with their subclass attack. That was neat!
