Not your screen monkey (he/him)
Much of the commentary here suggests that they should have tried to compete directly with Wizards. I think that would be a mistake. Paizo has always really excelled at catering to a devoted audience with detailed lore, extremely challenging adventures, and a game that allows you to build the character you want to play. It's their core competency.

Whether or not they compete for the exact same niche or on the same terms/scale, Paizo is always in direct competition with WotC just as they are with every other RPG company simply because customers don't have unlimited time or money enough to buy and play all examples of somewhat similar products.

But I agree, there's no need for them to try to fill the exact same niche when what they do best is something a bit different, even if similar and involving a bit of overlapping markets.

I kinda don’t understand though. Why NOT do a 5e OGL game with lots more crunch? Tweaked to play their story lines? Written to support their own IP? And at least compatible to 5e.

What they did is write a less convoluted OGL game that isn’t directly compatible to their previous version, tweaked to support their APs and IP that is more crunchy than 5e. So almost the same results? Just without a nose? Maybe?

I can’t argue with their success though. So what do I know?

PF2 is at 2014
PHB is at 73
Essentials is at 40
And the Starter set is at 312

I don’t know if the essentials and starter set numbers matter though, are they in a different category?

GreyLord

Legend
The Essentials Kit is GREAT stuff. You can create your own characters, it goes up to level 6 (in the box, you don't have to download something extra) and you have five classes to choose from with several archetypes each.

It SHOULD be doing awesome (or I would hope).
