Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Sorcerer and Warlock

There's a new Unearthed Arcana from WotC today, hot on the heels of the recent one for barbarian and monk. "Two classes, the sorcerer and the warlock, discover new playtest possibilities this week. The sorcerer receives a new Sorcerous Origin feature: the Aberrant Mind. Meanwhile, the warlock gains a new Otherworldly Patron feature: the Lurker in the Deep. We’ve also included a new cantrip: mind sliver."

I’ll have to look back at the last year of UAs. I don’t recall Giant Soul being in.

Regardless, Crawford let us in on a general design guideline. He also noted that sometimes an option is popular in general, but not specifics, so it goes back to the drawing board.

You put too much stock in every little statement by the design team. Every statement in an interview or twitter thread isn’t inscribed on a stone tablet.

Yeah, it was up just over a year ago. Best case scenario, it's back on the drawing board. Doubt it will come down again anytime soon.

Or it will be cannibalized for something else, or will sit in limbo until a Dark Sun book is in the works, or any number of things, sure. My point was simply that we don’t know.

Given how sparse that document was, it might even help, as there is ample room for a full setting book.

Absolutely. The idea that those articles constitute a finished setting document is pretty strange. They are less official than UA options!

I’d love to see a book the size of Rising that explores at least 2-3 MtG worlds, a couple classic DnD worlds, and delves into world building and world/planes hopping campaigns.

What would Zendikar's setting niche be?

Eberron is pulpy Noir and wide magic

Forgotten Realms is Epic Heroic Fantasy

Greyhawk Griittier Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery

Darksun is Post Apocolyptic Fantasy

Ravenloft Horror and Gothic Fantasy

Spelljammer is Space Odyssey Fantasy

Planescape is Philosophy and Planar Fantasy

Dragonlance is Sagas

Ravnica is extreme Planetary Urban Fantasy and Magitech.

Heck even Theros which is coming out before Zendikar has it's niche which is really popular right now, Greek Mythology inspired Fantasy

So what is Zendikar's niche? Especially since the next block is post Lovecraftian Horror (which FR has in spades already in many ways, in abdunance).

That could work actually, MtG setting tend to be a lot smaller then D&D settings, with a only a couple of exceptions such as Dominara or Ravnica.

Zendikar is Points of Light, filtered through Heavy Metal album art.

Jewel of the North, formerly know as vincegetorix
There's also 2 new settings for MtG coming next year:
  • One with a heavy fairytales theme, reminds me of Shrek :p
  • Another one with only a few infos out for now, but it revolves along being a monstruous creatures - I could see those subclasses fitting this one.

Zendikar's setting niche is bismuth and hedrons.
