5E Unearthed Arcana: Sorcerer and Warlock

There's a new Unearthed Arcana from WotC today, hot on the heels of the recent one for barbarian and monk. "Two classes, the sorcerer and the warlock, discover new playtest possibilities this week. The sorcerer receives a new Sorcerous Origin feature: the Aberrant Mind. Meanwhile, the warlock gains a new Otherworldly Patron feature: the Lurker in the Deep. We’ve also included a new cantrip: mind sliver."

The Aberrant Mind sorcerer...meh. Flavorful? Maybe, but meh. It is almost exactly like the Dragon sorc, but with slime and psionics. It's capstone is...different?

The Lurker warlock...

I like it. It is different enough from the other patrons that it makes it interesting. Very flavorful, but I would possibly tweak the spell selection.

Interesting.

Very Cthulhu vibe to both of them. Warlock reminds me of Shadow Over Innsmouth.

And the Sorcerer reminds me of ... um ... a GOO Warlock. So, there's that. :)

Definitely pushing the psionic / Lovecraftian angle. IMO.
I noticed that too! This makes me wonder what the next adventure path or book could be (after Eberron, of course).

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

I mean, psionics makes me think Dark Sun, but this is too Lovecraftian for that.

Have to admit, this is a real head-scratcher in terms of settings. Perhaps something Planescape-y?

It's about time that the Sorcerer gets freed up to enter the design space the Warlock was squating on in the PHB: give us Fey and Fiendish Sorcerers, too!

Finally, the long-awaited psychic sorcerer subclass has arrived. Sadly, I am sure we will be inflicted with "but my psychic sorcerer doesn't have slimy skin" before too long.

Demogorgon wants to remind everyone that he doesn't use a lot of fire spells, but he does do a lot of tentacles, so he offering up to be a Lurker in the Depths patron.

The Adventure books have never had Class stuff, don't expect that to change. This is for a supplement or setting product.
And perhaps related to the flumph-y Barbarians?

I just .... hmmmm. I have to admit, Mind Flayers were definitely something I was thinking of.

Maybe another Stranger Things tie in? Adventuring in the upside down?

So, of the four Subclasses presented to us in a few week period, three are pretty explicitly Psionic, while one is amped-up high magic....

This, plus the Wilder barbarian and psychic-mental-arms-kung-fu monk kind confirms to me that they are testing the Psionics-as-spell-slot-caster they were talking when they were looking for ways to add psionic flavored archetypes to the other classes before creating a new psion class.
