D&D 5E Dragon Talk on Tyranny of Dragons

You could certainly use most of Avernus without going anywhere near not just Baldur's Gate, but the Realms completely. I considered transplanting it to Eberron (Avernus is just a realm in Shavarath or something) but decided it was not worth the effort in this circumstance.
I prefer stealling what I like to put in Eberron rather then converting the entire adventure. If I have to go trought that much work, I'll just make my own campaign hahahah.

Heck, it got mostly good reviews, though reception was mixed and even those of us who enjoyed it had complaints.

Amazon, after 298 reviews, is at 59% 5 star, 20% 4 star, 10% 3 star, 7% 2 star and 4% 1 star. While this does make it the least well received of the 5E Adventure products.... that's pretty good.

I guess the ability to rate and do reviews here of published books disappeared with the new website, but I remember this adventure being the poorest rated of all the 5E books by users of EnWorld.

Yes, it certainly was: indeed, Hoard of the Dragon Queen was the only 5E Adventure book to not have a net positive reception here (even Rise of Tiamat was confirmed as a thumbs up). Still, it had positive and mixed reviews here.

For sure, Rise of Tiamat was when I realized that the Adventure books are all basically a string of individual modules with some useable yet removable plot connective tissue.
With some very cool lore and setting information, and more often than not rules for specific stuff that don't fit in a core book. Rise had the intrigue tables of dealing with multiple powerfull factions, how to make an iconic monster playable for lower levels, and the stats for tiamat

Glad to hear they're reworking the opening. One of the things I had to change was the "Hey first level PCs, go save the town being attacked by a dragon!"

The talk of Draconians has me super-excited for the possibility of Krynn getting some official 5e love.

The original opening is so completely insane, and I kind of love it: a hot mess, but so ambitious, and it can work.

Totally! All I did to tweak it was give them a quick adventure beforehand with a McGuffin they needed to deliver to someone living in the town and waited to reveal the dragon until they were already in the thick of it.

Gaming is fun, and fun is for everyone
Hoard of the Dragon Queen is one of the weakest hardcover adventures for 5e, if you take Amazon reviews seriously. The only one that does worse is Dungeon of the Mad Mage (which is very specifically made for dungeon-crawling parties) and Descent into Avernus (which just released, so don't take those reviews too seriously just yet).

That said, Tyranny of Dragons gets a lot better reviews. And even though it's one of the weaker adventures, Hoard still gets a 4.2 out of 5, which isn't bad.

Saying that Hoard could have killed 5e is ridiculous, especially when you compare it the many, many modules/adventures released in previous conditions, most of which are far worse. People forget that the standard of quality for 5e has simply been incredible.

I put them in the city from the start, interacting with npcs in a tavern, and then the attack hits. The owner of the tavern was a retired adventurer and B-lined to the dragon while asked them to save the townfolk. That made them invested and showed the power of the dragon when it killed the tavern owner.
