Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Cleric, Druid, Wizard Options

In another new Unearthed Arcana (these things are coming out fast right now!) the cleric receives a new Divine Domain option: the Twilight Domain; the druid gains a new Druid Circle option: the Circle of Wildfire; and the wizard gains a new Arcane Tradition feature: Onomancy, the magic of true names.

I have some questions on Resonant Utterance, I'm looking for other's views.

Does an AoE like Fireball target someone simply because they are in the area? Or are they not targets so we can't apply Resonants? (And if it does count, does that mean we can make someone not in the area take the Fireball damage with the Sympathy one?)

Dissolution gives extra damage the first time they are damaged by the spell. I'm assuming that's a separate source, just triggered by the spell. For example, if the target saved vs.a damage spell and was taking half, they would still take all of the bonus damage.

You know I think they missed a trick with having ones that granted advantage or resistance so you could say the true name of an ally and protect them - your magic knows and accepts them. Nullification has a touch of this where you could dispel a spell off an ally you buff.

  • Barbarian: Path of the Wild Soul.
  • Monk: Way of the Astral Self.
  • Sorcerer: the Aberrant Mind.
  • Warlock: Lurker in the Deep.
  • Bard: College of Eloquence.
  • Paladin: Oath of Heroism.
  • Cleric: Twilight Domain.
  • Druid: Circle of Wildfire.
  • Wizard: Onomancy.

...Not really anything that connects these together. If I had to tie these to a setting book, I'd say it's a Magic book detailing several planes, or it is just Planescape reimagined.

Twilight cleric's Channel Divinity power is extremely powerful. For a fun minute (so, basically an entire encounter), everyone within 30 feet of you gains a d8 temp HP every round? WOW. That's HUGE. That stands people up from negative HP, doesn't it?
It doesn’t. From the PHB:
If you have 0 hit points, receiving temporary hit points doesn't restore you to consciousness or stabilize you. They can still absorb damage directed at you while you're in that state, but only true healing can save you.

But, the fact that every single round, every single PC is getting bonus HP is a big, big advantage. Plus, at the end, everyone is going to have a d8 temp HP to take into their next encounter.

Recharges on a short rest? That's a big deal.
It is strong, but most of those hit points will be “wasted” unless everyone is taking at least a d8 damage every round as well. So, you can basically think of this as giving everyone in the area DR/8 for the duration. Which, don’t get me wrong, is still very powerful!

Okay so which MtG setting do these subclasses suggest?

I'm thinking Ixalan, maybe Dominaria, but others have greater expertize on this then I do. Long shot Alara.

Doesn't really scream anything to me. The druid and cleric seem pretty normal to any setting, Onomancy seems to be an idea pulled from Earthsea (fantasy series). Pretty generic, so Dominaria ;)

Don't forget the Archivist Artificer, which Crawford let slip is part of this same fold during one of the Beyond videos (the one about Mind Sliver).

I think Xanatathar's II: The Classening or some big wild Setting book like you describe seem to be the prime candidates.

Still can't shake the feeling that these options fit a Magic style universe.
