D&D General Is there a better summary of Midgard?

So I'm looking over the Midgard Worldbook; I had never encountered this setting before.

I like what I see, but the sheer volume of material really makes me doubtful of trying to run a campaign in it. Is there a shorter, most concise setting book?

Not that I know of, sadly.

Tome of Beasts and Creature Codex contain little tidbits of setting information, but that’s probably not what you are looking for.

I would focus on a region. Each region has some themes and tone that seem to go along with it. Want weird Lovecraft stuff? Check out the wasted west. Want arab-esque dragon empire? Check out the Mharoti empire. Chivalry and standard medieval war seasons around the Seven Cities. Egyptian and other Saharan tropes (or other parts of Africa?) are in the Southlands.

Honestly, Midgard roughly aligns geopolitically with the area around the Mediterranean. So imagine what part of that area and it’s culture and history you’d like to play with, then go find the amped up fantasy version of it in Midgard.

The intro to the Worldbook does provide a high-level overview that’s really useful, but trying to boil down a whole complex setting (not quite as complex or convoluted as the Forgotten Realms, but with similar broad scope) is not going to be easy.

I love the concept of Midgard, but feel the book tried to publish the entire world all at once. Focusing on a single region and learning the new character stuff is probably the best way to go about it. My friend got it, and after talking about it, he realized he could run a dozen campaigns without ever overlapping our locations...

This is absolutely true. In fact, Kobold Press has published a number of adventures and one shots that could be strung together into two separate campaigns spanning levels 1-10 - one campaign in the Crossroads area and another in the Southlands. You can read more about that here: So You Want to Play in Midgard? (But You Don’t Know Where to Start)

That's a good start. But keeping my players in one region isn't likely; they will take off if they see something interesting. I think I'm going to work up a one-paragraph-per-region cheat sheet, and let my players bone up on it as they desire. The map isn't really all that huge compared to some fantasy settings (which I like).

Probably just the Zobeck gazeteer. That's where I recommend starting.

I like Midgard - but it's a D&D game setting with all that usually implies. You get a big book full of what are in effect lots of different settings most of which you will never probably use unless you're really into it.

The core of the game is the crossroads area which is basicaly set around the Free city of Zobeck. Most of the additional material for the game such as adventuers is set around this area. For example Tales from the Old Margreve is a series of adventures set in the forest right next to Zobeck. The adventure Courts of the Shadow Fey begins in Zobeck.

Do any of those adventures deal with that ruined Castle the old Lord of Zobeck had? I chose Nuria Natal, Zobeck was an option I presented the big bags were gonna be the vampires and ghoul imperium.

Zobeck is my next choice as artificers and warforged could be slotted in.

None of those mentioned, but there is an adventure titled Return to Castle Shadowcrag that does. There’s an adventure for the castle in an older edition, too, that could be converted if you wanted.
