I like M:tG a lot, but it's a hard none from me. Theros is not only a weird choice, but totally unnecessary (there are a number of Kickstarter 5E Ancient Greece settings, hell Odyssey of the Dragonlords is like, out now, at least to backers. And Ken Hite was coming out with Hellenistika, which I guess he won't bother with now, and which seems like it was a lot cleverer and more daring than Theros seems to be - and I know Odyssey has much better subclass design than Theros does, based on the mentioned subclasses), and taking up resources that could be used for either updating an actual D&D setting, or doing something genuinely new (I really don't mind which). If this sort of muddled thinking is what they're doing with M:tG settings, well, the best thing that could possibly happen is that they stop. And at least reassess what the heck they're doing.

Comparing Hellenistika to Theros or Odyssey of the Dragonlords or Arkadia is a mistake. Theros, Odyssey of the Dragonlords, Arkadia, ect... Are inspired by classical Greece, Homer, and maybe to a degree Hesiod.

Hellenistika is the Hellenistic Era, think more Ptolemies and the other large Greek empires and other nations within their cultural sphere, like Roman, and the Greco-Bactarian state and so on. So it's a lot bigger and more diverse then just classical Greece, so there is no reason for it to negatively impact Hellenistika.

Corona Virus on the other hand might delay it, like it's lead other companies to cancel or delay kickstarters.

I wasn't really thinking about that aspect but you're right. Hopefully that's enough to ensure it does eventually see the light of day. It sounded rather exciting.

I voted Amonket for the flavour, but Zendikar makes the most sense. In the fall you will have a new Zendikar set, so not only do you have a tie in opportunity, its the third time they have been to Zendikar giving them plenty of material to work with.

But this book IMHO won't come out until 2021.

I like the possibilities in Eldraine and Ikoria, although they are very new, they are very well thought-out and fun, but because they are so new, there isn't as much content to explore, I mean they have only one set apiece, and a few decks each. Compare that to all the sets Dominaria, Ravnica, Innistrad, Theros, Amonket, Alara, ect... Have, each has at least several blocks, novels and odds and ends built up over years with more coming.

They've done three Setting books in a row, I'm done playing the getting against another Setting book game now.

Well, marketing wise it's a very natural choice, for tie-in purposes. And other than that one 2E book and Deities & Demigods material, Hellenistic D&D is underserved. I don't expect WotC will pay too much attention to 3rd party publishers when making decisions, at any rate.

I guess they've found the new Setting book format somewhat lucrative, since they've seen for to put out 4 in 18 months... :o

I think part of it was the realization that they were releasing APs faster then folks could play them, so they needed something else, and too many books like XGTE would cause complaints, so settings serve as a opportunity for a mix, plus they are just fun to read in their right, like Travel Guides, even if you don't play in the settinv for RP.

Oh and there was the survey early on asking for more setting books.

I voted none, but I have nothing against the Magic settings in particular, I just think we have had far too many settings books recently, and it needs to be given a rest for a couple of years.

I voted none, not that i particularly dislike the idea or ravnica, especially since you can take ideas from Rvvnica for Eberron and vice versa, but I think either they go all the way and release the whole MtG stuff over time, or they should focus on something else, e.g. expanding on Eberron or different FR areas or planescape.

All other campaign settings are to out of date and niche (do not get me wrong I love most of them)
and are better done by us grognards doing a conversion to 5e without all the new anything goes principles to be a have to have part to be shoehorned into every classic setting, just to claim that they have covered it.

Its not either or, they can do both.
