It's probably peaked.

Well, the issue with this is that it states it out of context.

What you are really saying is, "We are headed into a worldwide recession." This has nothing to do with D&D, in specific - it isn't that D&D has peaked, but that maybe the world has peaked.

Which, really, is a discussion that's beyond the scope of this thread, and likely these boards.

Pretty much. Recession is optimistic. Recession would make me happy.

It's not D&D's fault. Amazon's got closed in France,USPS isn't looking good so that kills Amazon if that falls over.

Week 6 of lockdown, gives you lots of time to hang out on Reddit and other boards. Steam friends contacting me as well.

For some strange mysterious reason Australia and New Zealand seem to be popular wish list destinations.

If you want to discuss the upcoming apocalypse this probably isn't the place for it.

At some point the American government will have to do something about this or face massive riots. Still I really wish your friend and those in the same boat to have some better luck, and I will pray for the poor Americans.

Yeah we're reasonably alright here. Worst case scenario we're not gonna end up on the street no matter what.
I don't really care to much about myself. She was just the first.

I crit!
If a World wide depression sets in I think D&D is in a good position at least compared to video games. Maybe not the online aspect. But maybe, a really low end PC can run discord.

And on that cheery note... :)

I have to say, right now, I'd give up a lot of things before I gave up D&D, and I think the people I play with would too. I mean, they only ongoing costs we have between the whole group are two subscriptions to Beyond. Me and another DM bought pretty much all the books ages ago. I skipped Wildemount because why would I pay money for an ultra-generic setting and three subclasses so unbalanced they make actual attempts to break 5E look reasonable by comparison (I mean it's cool, and I'm glad they did it but that's not something I need in my life - I bet if I was like 20, I'd be, like arguing that actually those classes were fine and the DM should definitely let me play an Infinity Knight or whatever it's called), but I fully expect to buy Theros, and the other DM bought Eberron, and I don't see it likely being worth cutting that stuff when there's other stuff I could (and probably should) cut.

Yeah this exactly. Maybe sales of D&D will peak next year because of a depression; that doesn't mean that D&D is less popular, just that people don't have the same capacity to spend on it.

That said, I find D&D products are more resilient to economic shocks like these compared to other recreational activities. People are craving social interaction, and D&D allows you to do that if you have an internet connection. Plus, you can purchase a good amount of material that is digital only, helping the businesses of the DMsGuild, Roll20, and DnDBeyond (I never touched Roll20 until this crisis).

Bottom line, the D&D product line may go down; but compared to Hasbro's other products, it probably won't go down as much. So D&D may get more investment into the future if Hasbro considers it one of its healthiest product lines, more resilient to these economic shocks.

Gah, that’s depressing.

I don't see a world wide depression happening, because most countries will set up a UBI or quasi UBI, and proper support for small businesses, which was coming eventually anyways, this just hit the fast forward button by a couple of decades or more, its the Americans I fear will plunge into a depression.

The real threat to WotC isn't market loss, its what happens if its parent company Hasbo starts going t***up from its lose of sales, how does that effect WotC.

Anyways dispite current challenges I believe D&D will have a very bright future.

Where America goes the rest of the world still follows. American market still the most important for D&D.

On the plus side D&D isn't AMC or Disney.
