WotC Hasbro Reports First Quarter Earnings

Here is the link to the full report:

Magic is mentioned several times, while D&D is mentioned only once, but in a positive way:

U.S. and Canada segment delivered higher revenues and profits behind strong growth in Gaming, including MAGIC: THE GATHERING tabletop, MONOPOLY, DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS and many other Hasbro games such as THE GAME OF LIFE, JENGA, CONNECT 4 and OPERATION.

Having it specifically called out with the other games generating profit and strong growth is always good to see.

Monopoly is a big earner for them these days? Sheesh. I mean its an ok game I guess but (a) I thought everyone had a copy and (b) there are a lot better.

It's because every IP franchise is getting a specific release of Monopoly. I have a Star Wars version from back in the 90s when that was a relatively new idea, but now it's harder to find traditional Monopoly than Minions, Star Wars, Frozen, Warhammer 40k, etc

They don't publish the exact numbers, but I'm very confident stating as a fact that every year since Hasbro has owned WotC, Monopoly has made them more net profit than D&D has.

We are in a great growth period for TTRPGs, but it's important to remember that it's still a very niche hobby. I once had access to Mintel data on gaming and leisure time market research, and the only place D&D (or any TTRPG) got mentioned was in reference to video games.

How long ago was that?

Speaking of Monopoly, in addition to all the licensed versions, Hasbro is still doing variations themselves. They are putting out a Ghostbusters Monopoly based on the original film:
