D&D 5E WotC Announcement?

All of the old TSR sci-fi games—Gamma World, Star Frontiers, Metamorphosis Alpha—seem dated; in a fun way, but not a way that I would think WotC would want to run with.

If they do go sci-fi, I would expect either an updated version of Alternity, some kind of near-future dystopia (apropos to the times), or some kind of science fantasy ala Numenera/Spelljammer.

The 80's are in: never say never.

I think a dystopia could work, but only if there is a spark of hope and opportunity to be heroes in a dark world, because people want hope and optimism right now.

Hi, I'm a Mindflayer, but don't let that worry you
Today's the day.

My guess: announcement for Kate Welch's short adventure book, or a Mindflayer-focused adventure path... or both.

I think, having had a little taste of dystopia now, it's appeal has dropped a bit...

(Indead, there is some evidence from streaming services that dystopian films have fallen in popularity.)

My Dystopias are so Dystopian they Dystop the crap out of COVID. My dystopias cut to heart of what it means to be human in the face of Armageddon, like not being able to get a good take out curry, or having trouble with your PDF margins when you print. Someone linked all my paperclips into a chain! Noooooooo.....
