D&D 5E strong smelling books

Hi all,

My copies of Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus and Explorer's Guide to Wildemount both have a strong chemical odor when I open them. It first I thought it was the ink, but now I'm thinking it might actually be coming from the glue in the bindings. It's so strong that I can't read either book for more than a few minutes without getting a headache. None of my other 5e books smell like this.

Just curious to know if anyone else has experienced this, or am I the only one?

Yeah, I've experienced this as well, and like you say the smell seems stronger in certain books, it's Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus and Ghosts of Saltmarsh for me, and it also gives me headaches if I read these books for too long. These seem to smell like "sourness that has gone off" is the closest I can describe it, and seems to be coming from the binding, or the pages themselves, or possibly the ink, or even all of that. Hopefully Theros doesn't have this strong chemical odour!

Not somethig I've noticed. You might try taking the books outside standing them up in an open position and blowin a fan across them for a few hours to see if it lessens the situation.

I haven’t tried a fan but I did leave the Descent book open for the better part of a day. Didn’t really help.

Place the covers at 90 degrees to each other, with the spine going up and down.

Aim a fan at it, maybe from behind (ideally above, aiming down) the covers so not to push the pages too flat.

That might air it out better than just leaving it open.

My copy of The Book of Exalted Darkness smells like fear, spoiled meat, and the tears of lost children. Is that the same sort of problem do you think?

One way to decrease the smell is to take a plastic container with a lid, put a layer of kitty litter in the bottom, open the book and put it in, and then put the lid on (something airtight is best). Leave it that way for a couple of weeks, periodically opening it up and flipping some of the pages. I have used that method successfully before.

I've definitely had a few books smell toxic when I unwrapped them. The smell's worn off over the years, for the most part.
