A question: in a sandbox style game, Recall Knowledge/other skills, while approaching an encounter, but before actually engaging it, wouldn't give enough info to the players in order to decide if a monster/situation is within their reach, as in level appropriate, doable?
Recall Knowledge is problematic, so maybe. A success lets you gain a useful clue about your current situation, so you might be able to intuit that a creature is too dangerous. However, the DCs are such that a tough monster might be too difficult to gauge, so you could end up drawing the wrong conclusion.

It might if you do not get any critical failures. It's a [Secret] check so against higher level monsters (who have higher DCs) it might not be the most reliable.
