The Book of Dungeon Encounters, for use with Fantasy RPGs from Philip Reed Games
  • END DATE: Thu, July 9 2020 4:01 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): System neutral
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $1 for the PDF
  • NOTE: I have an interview with Phil Reed coming up here at EN World
“A collection of 100 different dungeon encounters that gamemasters can use with almost any fantasy roleplaying game. The Book of Dungeon Encounters is a 48-page 8.5" x 11" saddle-stitched book that is packed with 100 different dungeon encounter ideas. These are for use with almost any fantasy RPG, especially old-school RPGs that use square grids for combat, though imaginative gamemasters will no doubt find ways to adapt everything detailed within these pages to any system, including those that use hexes for combat maps. The book is presented as a giant d100 table, giving the gamemaster 100 different encounter ideas that can either be randomly rolled or selected to construct a dungeon. 90 of the encounters are presented as descriptions only -- no maps -- and range from low-level fights against dungeon beasties all of the way to strange gateways that lead to other worlds. Ten of the encounters include square grid maps that were created using the SkeletonKey Games 2e Adventure Tiles.”

The Collector, a man of wealth and power, will stop at nothing to get that which he desires. RPG Adventure Module 5E D&D, Pathfinder 1E. Through the hustle and bustle of the busy tavern, you notice the front doors open. A tall man with brown hair, and a finely trimmed mustache and goatee enters the room. He wears a bright red shirt that is stitched together with silver thread. A jeweled sword hangs from his hip. He is flanked by 6 heavily armed men. Each of the 6 men wears a uniform, colored red and black with gold trim. An intimidatingly large Irish Wolfhound, with a gold collar, follows the tall man faithfully. The tall man heads towards the crowded bar. He is a man of wealth, status, and privilege, known as the Collector. When he wants something, he gets it, by any means necessary. And you have something that he wants. How will your players react when they find out that a rich and powerful man is after their most prized possession? And to what lengths will they go to get it back?”

Inn between Worlds.png

Inn between Worlds from Texas in August Studio :fate:
  • END DATE: Thu, July 16 2020 8:42 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Fate
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $30 for the PDF and printed versions
“An RPG supplement about an inn and tavern that sit on damage to reality. It's like the Bermuda Triangle with a front desk. You don’t just use the inn between worlds as an occasional base between adventures. It is a home to adventures. The taverns and inns play an important part of RPGs is long established. For the most part, after party meets and works out their next adventure, inns and taverns are neglected. This is a pity. There is a lot of potential for adventure with an inn and a tavern. Inn between Worlds is my effort at making the place a home to adventures. The Inn between Worlds also provides seven new powers or stunts, five new monsters, 12 NPCs, tables for encounters and plot hooks. It also has a new subsystem, which helps a gaming group design their own version of the hotel or inn-and-tavern. So, the GM can use the predesigned version that comes with the book, or the group can design their own unique take on the place.”

It's a common practice for many publishers. Briefly, I write about the use of stock art and reusing the same stock art for the covers of different books at d20 Radio. In that article, I look at the reuse of a piece by Tithi Luadthong as the cover for at least three projects.

As expectations rise alongside costs, it's not shocking that more and more small publishers are using stock art for projects. So long as the artists can continue to make a living producing new stock art, we'll be just fine.

The challenge for publishers is to find ways to make their work -- even with stock art -- stand out from the pack. It's something I think about constantly.

Provided the artwork being used is owned by Philip Reed, I'm not bothered by him reusing artwork for a PDF that I'm paying $1 for. It's tremendous value at that price with no artwork at all.

I paid the cost to license/use the artwork, and I include the artist's appropriate legal designation in the material.

(Also, in this particular instance, the artist shared my project on Facebook with his friends, so I think I'm all good.)

This is true. In a few months, I'll share an article about how I attempted just that, make a public domain piece of art into a unique cover. @philreed, do you mind if I quote that entire post in the article? It summarizes my thinking on the subject perfectly. (No pressure either way. ;-) )
As Philip Reed of Steve Jackson Games said:

Just to be clear, I had no doubt that you had permission or licence to use the image. I was just pointing out that I had no issue with the artwork not being brand new for this book.
