WotC WotC is hiring Senior Manager for Diversity, equity and inclusion.

That breaks from the hypothetical though. All else is equal. So they both are just as up to date on federal employment law. They also both know just as much about Japanese culture.

But in your hypothetical everything isn't equal. They may both have similar experience and skills, but for the past 10 years, the Englishman has been dealing with Japanese employment laws and culture whereas Carlton has the same experience in an American context. And, honestly, I don't even know if any Japanese companies have DEI initiatives like we do in the U.S.

I really tried not to sweat the details with the all else being equal clause, but really, you can just assume, for instance, that the English guy has lived some 10 years in Japan in the past, but has also lived and worked in the US for the last 10 years.

The point of my example: the ability to understand racism and discrimination isn’t tied to race. A rich and privileged person of color might not understand racism as well as a white person that has experienced gaijin status in Japan.
Thus, hoping that the new Wotc hire will be a BIPOC, LGBTQ etcetera is misguided in my opinion. I hope they get the best person for the job, full stop.

Considering Carlton's conservative political views, that would mean the white candidate would be the same. Then neither one would fit into the environment WotC is trying to create, and neither would get hired.

You really should try not to make political comments. those aren’t something I can respond to.

The problem is that nothing we do or do not say will make this hire any less political, so maybe this thread should just be locked down now before someone does go over the line. Or someone needs to pick a fictional example who was not conservative politically. Or who we had no clue what their views were, if that is even possible, since that is a part of all tv not aimed at little kids.

Why would you assume the white candidate is conservative? And remember, in this example Carlton already has experience handing DEI issues. Otherwise he never would have gotten an interview in the first place.

Much discussion has been generated about the word Primitive or [insert new "offensive" word/term of the week] as a perjorative for fantasy races but it seems A-ok using conservative as an implied perjorative for real life people. I mean I'm tempted to say we should take more care how we ascribe qualities to RL persons but I don't want to appear anti inclusive to the plight of our communal imaginary shaman-loving lizardmen and orcish raiders.

Because everyone else is saying "all other things being equal." That means every single factor that could come into a hiring decision and would apply as well to political view for a job where having the opposite politics of the rest of the staff would only cause tension and stress.
