Outside or removing the Elf racial requirement, the only other change I could imagine is removing the One hand Open requirement, and allowing the weapon chosen at 3rd level act as a spellcasting focus.

Strip away the restrictions so that any race can use any weapon and Bladesing, and a Githyanki Bladesinger Wizard feels like a PC Gith Knight.

Battle Smith is a more than decent Gish either. It's clear that in 5e terms, the true Arcane Gish is the Artificer (martial builds).

Not that the Battlesmith and hexblade both key off their spellcasting stat reducing MAD?

They failed a bit with gish but the Paladin and some cleric builds work.
It's the clerics you don't suspect though such as nature and arcana.

What's wrong with keying off spellcasting class for a Gish? MAD reduction is important. If you want to be good with strength skills, then invest in STR too. The point here is that your magic is what's making the attacks hit hard, not your core body Strength.

That's what they need to do to make it viable.

The other thing IMHO us why be a bad fighter when you can be a different subclass?

You can make it work with decent dice rolls but then things like Sorcerers make good Gish. Mountain Dwarf divine Soul or fire Sorcerer with green flame blade.

Valor Bard, War Cleric a few others a big meh. Bladesinger works with the right spells.

Ah, misunderstood, thought you were saying Cleric was fine but Artificer and Hexblade were BAD gishes.

I think melee clerics and bards et al work okay, you just need to invest in the the right abilities. Valor Bard works better as a Bow-Bard (or Xbow-Bard), honestly. It's not so MAD because 2 abilities can be safely invested in, 3 is a bit too much. So for example the Monk, that's trickier to go off message because you need baseline competency kept up with for both Dex and Wis. Paladins and Rangers need to keep up with their main attacking investment and Charisma/Wisdom. Martial Clerics & Bards need to do so with either Str/Dex and their Wis/Cha. Same thing with Eldritch Knights and Arcane Tricksters, but for Int.

2 abilities I can get reasonable investment in. 3 starts to get tricky.

Another possibility that fits Occam's Razor, is with 4 published settings, outside the Forgotten Realms world,, why wouldn't you take cool content from the low selling SCAG to the most likely, well selling Tasha's?

SCAG is high selling, though.

There was never any reason not to reprint classes from SCAG.

But the only reason to print a revised Bladesinger, rather Battlerager, Banneret or Oath of the Crown, all of which could be good with some revision, is a lack of other wizard options.
