Interesting side-note about the type of trailers we see. People enjoyed that cover of an old song example so much that they had the artist do the whole song for download.

I'd guess that the trailer probably made the movie look a lot more action-ey than it will actually be. I'm expecting something a lot more like Blade Runner 2049 - long running time, lots of slow, visceral scenes cut with occasional brutal action. Though probably a lot more talking than BR2049. ;)

It looks pretty good but kind of...empty. Lynch's film, despite its flaws, was deeply atmospheric and weird, with a real mystical quality. Based on this trailer, this seems more vanilla. But we'll see.

My theory for a Dune adaption is use the book mostly for inspiration.
Downplay the weird stuff, focus on spice and Harkonnen vs Atriedes.
Noble families in space feuding, harsh planet with rare resources.
Basically downplay the weird Bene Gesserit type stuff.
I suspect a good chunk of the Dune fan base also comes from the video games over the books as well.

The weird and creepy Bene Gesserit stuff is what makes it so great. Dune is a universe where not just men are in power. Certain groups of women wield immense power of the universe, by use of the spice. The role of the Bene Gesserit ties directly into the spice, Dune, the reason for the war itself, and most of the major plot points in the story. Without them, you have no story. Dune is a story about a messiah and a jihad. You can't have either of these things without the religion behind it all, which is what the Bene Gesserit are.

I would still have them. Just would focus to much in the philosophy stuff.

Their stuff works and they use spice, hint at prophecy and stuff.

If no one says "The spice must flow" I will be very upset...

My wife absolutely hates it when trailers give you most of the movie's plot points. There've been a ton of reveals in trailers that should have never been put in them. Had Empire Strikes Back been made today, any bets if "No, I am your father" would've been in the trailer?
Reveals? What reveals?
When you read the book, lots of stuff is given away early on through Paul's future wife, Princess Irulan's chapter opening statements.
