D&D 5E It's official, WOTC hates Rangers (Tasha's version of Favored Foe is GARBAGE)

The favored enemy options that Larian have for the ranger in BG3 are far more interesting and rangery that this favored foe crap.
It’s sad that a videogame studio understand the ranger class better than Wotc does.
It's funny how people on the Larian forums grumble that BG3 is different to 5e, and people on D&D forums grumble that 5e is different to BG3...

Rangers were dope in 1E.

Triple weapon specialisation and an ever-expanding class of creatures that were 'Giant type' plus some not usless spellcasting, and some OK other abilities.
Overpowered =/= good.

If people hadn't played the 1st edition ranger because it was overpowered I doubt it would have made it into 2nd.

That would be quite funny, except I'm not grumbling that 5e is different than BG3.

I'm disappointed that the esteemed D&D game designing team, put in the situation of having to figure out an alternate class feature to favored enemy, could only come up with something as bland, lame, weak and uninspired as this version of favored foe.
Meanwhile, the Larian design team, placed in the same situation (favored enemy as written clearly would not have worked in a videogame environment), came up with something that is far from perfect, but at least is flavorful and useful.

Pretty sure that was Mike Mearls working with Larian. You can see the early work he did on the Happy Fun Hour in the changes for the BG3 ranger. I'd have hoped that he'd bring it back to 5e proper but the designers seem very reluctant to actually release updates to a class.

I mean, they are going to do just that in Tasha. Sure, it's alternate class features, not updates, but it's a fine line.
If Mearls himself was directly involved in Larian's ranger, it is even more puzzling how we ended up with something crappy like favored foe published.
