D&D (2024) YART: Adding Ranger Spell Options to Class Features.

My issue is many of the options really don't fit Ranger. Imps and stuff. Nah.

There really should be a critter spell that Rangers and druids both can cast that level 1.
Are imps part of the normal FF spell though? Why not just let the ranger summon make beast of CR 1/2, medium or smaller, their familiar, rather than the weirder stuff like imps and quasits. (Maybe include fey and monstrosities, but that isn’t necessary)

It’s crazy that rangers and Druids don’t have a base class way to have a permanent critter friend, though, regardless. And the Druid spending a wild shape to get a more temporary familiar than the spell normally gives is just bunk.

looking at the list of basic familiars in 5.14 i feel most of them do fit the ranger being ordinary animals

bat, cat, crab, frog(toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish(quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider and weasel.
the only ones i'd say don't feel like they fit there are the five aquatic ones but with an appropriately themed ranger i'm sure they would work

then imp, pseudodragon, quasit and sprite are warlock exclusive, through pact of the chain i assume.

cranium rat and crawling claw were added by tasha's but state they need GM's permission, same with the gazer but that's also warlock exclusive.

Unfortunately Rangers got no new unique spells in 2024 and only received new Druid spells that they would be less effective with.

They actually lost at least one spell - Searing Smite, which was buffed in the new rules, used to be a Ranger spell, now it is no longer on their list.

Level 13: Relentless Hunter
Taking damage can’t break your Concentration on your Favored Spell.

Optional Level 13: Foebane
The damage die of your Favored spell is a d8 rather than a d6

Level 20: Foe Slayer
The damage die of your Favored spell is a d10 rather than a d6.

I think these three need to change to accommodate spells that are either non-damaging or non-concentration. I also think it needs to be restricted to 1st level spells.

If this were a General Ranger type, what kind of combat spells would you see offered up with Hunter's Mark and Ensnaring Strike that would give an iconic ranger feel and offer a nice spread of options?

Here are the spells I would add:

Magic Missile
Tasha's Hideous Laughter
Searing Smite
Fog Cloud
Bane
Burning Hands
Entangle
Inflict Wounds
Sleep
Wrathful Smite
Fairie Fire

I also agree with Cream about Find Familiar, but I don't think that should be a favored spell.

Finally, looking beyond spells, I think they should give them heavy armor proficiency and make either strength or dexterity a prime ability (along with Wisdom).
