WotC Wrath of the Immortals (BECMI) and The Book of Regency (Birthright) are now free for download

I just stumbled across this, and wanted to share. Wrath of the Immortals and The Book of Regency both just went up over on DriveThruRPG as PDFs. For whatever reason, they're both listed as being free. I have no idea if WotC's feeling generous or if someone hit the wrong price when they uploaded them or something else, but right now you can grab both products for nothing! Hurry and get them while you can, folks!

EDIT: A quick historical note: The Book of Regency was a product that was mostly complete by the time the Birthright setting was cancelled. As it was never commercially released, WotC released it as a free PDF back on their website in the year 2000, where it stayed for quite a while. As the page where it was offered has since been taken down, it's nice to see it get a wider re-release here.

My understanding is that when someone clicks on a DTRPG affiliate link, the affiliate gets a small commission if that person then buys anything from DTRPG over the next few days. (I think. If I'm wrong, it's not like I'm losing anything.)

Birthright is a setting I'd love to try out one day. Never got to it back in the day, but I think there's a lot that's appealing about the concept. And now, post Game of Thrones, I could see people really getting into ruling kingdoms.

Immortals-tier D&D was never something we got to back in the day, either. Two PCs reached immortality, but at that point we felt like they were done (and honestly, it wasn't long after that that we just switched to AD&D).

This is a good new. It is only we can get something free legally, but this means there is a open door for a future 5 Ed. version. Like a demo, teaser and test to know our reaction.

Now I wonder about players who want to be Kratos the immortal of the war.

Birthright may be the right setting for adult players who would rather something more "game of thrones" or palace intrigues. (How would be a fantasy version of the 80's soap opera "Falcon Crest"?). My suggestion for Birthright is to take advantage of the 2020 technology. Games set in Birthright could be easier thanks the right app in a tablet. Even online games with virtual tabletop. Birthright is also a franchise easy to be adapted into a strategy game.

If you like Birthright, take a look at Greg Stolz's "Reign".

It uses a non-linear resolution mechanic, and organizations with abstract stats (like treasury, military might, etc). Adventuring player actions then give bonus points (dice) to the organization's attempts to do things. You then resolve what the organization tries to do, and evaluate results, and repeat.

So instead of counting how many gp or peasants an organization has, you instead talk about the organization having its cohesion attacked (or whatever). And exactly how many peasants in the army matters less than how powerful the army and its generals are.
