Do you think there'll be another months long break between?

Do you think they'll keep playing DnD or change to a different system? Six years is a long time for DnD.
Mercer has been DMing D&D regularly since the early 90's, and is a pretty vocal fan of 5E. I think the D&D game will continue with another campaign. Although Mercer is writing his own modern urban fantasy game coming out next year, I think he loves D&D too much to stop.

I'd be surprised if they do not play D&D for the next campaign. First, they at least seem to enjoy it. But just as important they are now strongly associated with D&D. They also have the cartoon and a campaign book.

Besides, some people are quite happy playing D&D and don't see a need to switch systems.
I agree 100%, though Inexpext to see more and more side game over time, as their channel and company grows.

I'd like to see some of them play more non-core races in Campaign 3, whenever it starts. So far they've more or less played the core races (if you include Gnomes, Tieflings, Aasimar, Dragonborn, and Half-Orcs as core races, which I do), excluding Grog the Goliath, Caduceus the Firbolg, and Nott the Goblin (who turned out to just be a halfling). Maybe a Warforged as an Aeormaton, Lizardfolk, or Tabaxi (can you imagine Sam or Laura as a Tabaxi? That would be great). Some classes that they haven't played before would also be great. Maybe Sorcerer, another Warlock, and/or possibly a Wizard or Artificer? I would love to see the dynamic an artificer would add to the table, with the team splitting the infusions and playfully bickering over who gets the magic items.

I would also love another official Critical Role 5e book, hopefully with a revised and official Blood Hunter class. Wildemount is one of my favorite 5e setting books, tied with Eberron and just above Ravenloft. More official content for the world could be great, especially if the next campaign takes place in another area of Exandria that was more or less unexplored in either Critical Role campaigns (maybe the Shattered Teeth, Marquet or Issylra?).

I'm betting:

1.) There is a break between the end of campaign 2 and the start of campaign 3. It will be a while. They will have content during this break. Matt will not run most of it - it will include a sneak peak into the Legends of Vox Machina, and will include a lot of guest stars for the first time in a while.
2.) Campaign 3 will be D&D. They will unveil the 'return to the studio' for campaign 3.

I had a conversation with some folks about what we thought the PCs should be for campaign 3. The suggestions I liked most:

Ashley - A human College of Whispers bard to give her a chance to put a little sinister into her character. She did a wisdom and strength character - now a Charisma one. Of all the suggestions, this is the one that most intrigued me.

Sam - Minotaur paladin. Enough with the tiny little PCs - and the bullness gives him a lot of opportunities to make jokes. I think he'd really enjoy letting loose with a very physical character.

Laura - A LAWFUL GOOD Cavalier. Someone that respects the word of law and does what she can to make the world a safer place. This would stretch her wings a bit. She has been wise and dextrous - now strong. Bonus: Ashley's character's sister.

Taliesin - A hobgoblin druid with a dedication to putting an end to Bane's Curse of Strife that impacts the goblinoid races in Exandria. Taliesin enjoys funky character ideas and druids can be very funky.

Travis - A gnome artificer. Macaroni Samsonite's relative.

Marisha - Dwarven wild sorcerer. The chaos she'd thrive on the chaos. The limited spell list would be appealing to her.

Liam - Aarakocra Ranger. This would give him a move away from the standard races. The other suggestion that was enjoyed here was a Tabaxi monk. My choice for him was a Glasya Tiefling Ranger / Sorcerer archer with a deep belief that Asmodeus' label of Evil was unfair - he just wanted what he was due for protecting the Universe in the Blood War.

It's probably quite coincidental: the PCs are nearing maximum power, which Mercer doesn't like DMing for anyways, and they literally cannot top the current big bad. It is time to wrap it up.
This is an interesting big bad, but they could top it... and I imagine that they will when they return to these characters for future adventures. I expect that Trent Ikithone and the Luxon will play a key role in those future adventures - and they PCs will end up fighting the Luxon, who isn't what we think.

It is kind of a frustrating move to put a campaign on hold when the Wizard is on the cusp of learning Wish, especially given the wizard's backstory.

I thinknit would be extremely difficult to top on an emotional level.
