D&D 5E Ray Winninger mentions third project!

WotC's Ray Winniger has confirmed that another D&D release, by James Wyatt, will be released in between Witchlight (September) and Strixhaven (November). Strixhaven was Amanda Hamon's project, while Witchlight is Chris Perkins'. That assumes he's not referring to the Feywild accessory kit in September. Yes, WILD BEYOND THE WITCHLIGHT is the [Chris Perkins] story product I referenced in our dev blog. STRIXHAVEN is [Amanda Hamon's] project. We have not yet announced [James Wyatt's] project, which releases between WITCHLIGHT and STRIXHAVEN.

Why did we announce STRIXHAVEN so early? Pretty simple--there was no way to release the STRIX-related Unearthed Arcana without letting the cat out of the bag.

You'll learn a lot more about all of these products at D&D Live on G4, July 16 and 17. And yes, there is still a little surprise or two ahead.

You are the second person to respond about Meepo. My response is NO WAY! Keep that pump-action shotgun toting abomination away from my D&D! He can stay right over THERE in D20 Modern, thank you very much! :p
Meepo's the star of the Sunless Citadel and Tales from the Yawning Portal. That D20 Modern thing was just a phase while he was in college.
Also, he is not a scholarly type whereas Deekin is a known author of books, so he is a way better fit.
Nobody puts Meepo in the corner.

But why? I'm sorry, but this is all mostly wish-fulfillment for fans of these settings. I could see them doing Greyhawk as the iconic old school setting, but Mystara? I just don't see it happening, except as either within a Worlds of D&D book or maybe by a third party. Mystara doesn't add anything new to the 5E's thematic coverage, except for elves with mustaches.
Like Van Richten’s, they’d need a hook to give modern fans an in. Some worthwhile mechanical hook. Ravenloft being horror, obviously. Greyhawk could be the low-fantasy, dungeoncrawl, city-based, or political intrigue book. Mystara could be the hexcrawl and domain management book. I’m not familiar enough with Dragonlance to say anything more than maybe high level and/or epic level play? Either way, I’m hopeful VGR is the standard for setting books going forward. It gives you the mechanics you’d need and a fairly in-depth write up on many key locations and an overview/survey of many others. It’s more directly useful than yet another pure lore book for a setting that’s already got dozens of legacy lore books.

It occurs to me folks are too quick to dismiss influence of older gamers because they are a minority, but I've seen younger gamers turn to more experienced gamers with questions. Older Gamers have an outsided influence because they are knowledgable so inexperienced gamers turn to them, and so the tastes of older gamers help shape the younger gamers.
I think that’s over selling the influence older gamers have on their younger counterparts. In some cases, sure. Like a generational hobby thing. Me and my brothers all have kids we’ve corrupted with D&D. Let me tell you, those kids don’t give a damn about what we think about some moldy oldy setting. But the majority of people flocking to the game are not coming in that way. I can’t see them caring more about ancient lore than the kids raised by the gamers who do.
Plus older setting lore is plastered all over wikis making it alot easier to make new young fans of older settings.
There’s some quote about a horse and water that might be relevant.

Greyhawk isn't terribly low fantasy. All those named spells in the PHB? Greyhawk. All those named magic items and artifacts in the DMG? Greyhawk.

I'm not sure I'd do a campaign setting to talk about dungeons, unless it was a mega-dungeon as a campaign setting. I'm not sure, though, that you'd need or want more than Castle Greyhawk for that.

City-based intrigue could work, but is Greyhawk better suited for that than just using Waterdeep or another Sword Coast city? The Greyhawk folio was my first campaign setting, and I waited eagerly for the City of Greyhawk boxed set, but I don't know that I'd argue it's a better city than many other examples we've had since, like Sharn.
Mystara could be the hexcrawl and domain management book.
True, but the areas designated for settlements and domains are, by design, away from the main gist of the Known World, so I'm not sure if people would really be happy with that as a Mystara setting book. And, again, is it better than Birthright, which was designed from the ground up for that purpose? Probably not.

I don't have Theros, but it was my understanding that book worked the same way. And I agree, as fun as setting books can be, they're more useful if they're presented as a toolkit: "Here's how we created our chivalric campaign world, now, here's how to do your own!"
