I think you have like 12 federal holidays now, right? We have 3 (equivalent) -- Xmas, NY, and Easter. You guys have one a month on average.

We make up for it by not paying the government employees who get them off as much as private industry, making most of the population still work on all but a handful of them, and making the ones of those with kids scramble for child care.

Actually, I think the equivalent is bank holidays in the UK. And anyway, work with a bunch of folks who live in Colombia, and they have 24 holidays. I guess if you can't improve your citizen's wages in a meaningful way, give them more days off! But ideally, you just give everybody both...
