It wasn't "in character" for Bartholomew unless he's been pointed out that part of the contract! Bartholomew totally missed it on his own read through.

Alvin looks at the contract, and scratches his head. He is sure he was told to make a deal, and he is prepared to tie this devil's freedom to his own. But already things have changed, and he doesn;'t know who is committing what. And again there is a soul clause, which he knows -- he knows -- Lanthander would not want him to sign.

He looks up. "Where's the other one?" he asks. He cannot read the Duke of Cania's expression, try as he might. "The other contract, the one you would have presented if I had accepted the other deal as well. If you already had my soul, this contract would have made no sense." He points roughly where his more legally minded companions had been pointing in the contract.

"You have my word already, and you have yet to tell us what we are in fact dealing for. But the deals were supposed to be separate from each other. So show us the other contract, please."

The Archdevil repeats the same process, presenting to you a second contract. This one purports to allow you his services in any one task, for a maximum duration of 1 minute, plus his ongoing guidance and counseling, and a magic item, in exchange for your immortal soul and a ticket out of the plane.

'If you change your mind again Paladin, you should strongly consider signing that second contract. You would save the lives of so very many, in exchange for something as trivial as your soul.''

Alvin tears the second contract, and lets the pieces fall, disappointed that the devil is playing so true to his nature. Alvin knows he doesn't understand the first contract fully, and the nuances are lost on him.

"You know that is not what I meant, Duke of Cania. I do not bargain with souls. This contract with us is not like those you have always made. You want to leave this place, and I have given you my word that I would do what I can to accomplish that, if you let us pass. That should be enough for you, given that we are the best hope you have had to leave in some time." (Here Alvin gestures at the zombies around the devil.) "You surely have sufficient magics even in this place to know that, by Lathander, I am speaking truly."

"You say you have an item that can help us, but you will not say what it is. More games. If you present it to us now, show us what it is that may help us secure your freedom, now that I have given you my oath, we can consider this..." He waves the initial contract he had been presented. "The truth is you want your freedom again, and your not agreeing to let us pass is nothing but stubborn pride."

FYI @Flamestrike I was just typing that I would like to assist in any persuasion/intimidation check as Alvin assisted me earlier. Both trained and currently have the fiend's attention!

He rolls it around in his hands, patiently waiting for you to sign the contract, his other hand straying near his spiked black mace.

The Zombie also provided you with a very sharp quill, but no ink. The implication is pretty clearly that it needs to be signed in your blood.
