The One Ring 2E: General Discussion Thread

I am starting to zoom in on the campaign I want to run: all dwarf PCs, out of the kingdom Thrain and Thorin established in the Blue Mountains before Thrain went off and Thorin retook Erebor. The focus will be on a group of dwarves descended from those who aligned with Sauron in the past, and the PCs will, if successful, ultimately be able to keep that faction from joining the War of the Ring and tipping the balance.

This sounds very cool. But is it a bummer not having variety in terms of Cultural Blessings?

I don't know. I haven't run it yet otherwise. But I feel like a strong hook is worth the sacrifice, especially in a new game where the fewer moving bits and bobs, the better.

I've got two sessions down of the alpha...
It definitely feels like an alpha.

Hope is, indeed, less tightly restricted.
It also feels wasted when a major failure happens.
TNs indeed feel too high.

new travel system is faster, but also more bland, and without enough examples.

Feeling a little dumb about the standard edition book, with none of the trimmings, currently headed my way, but trying to remind myself that I will likely never run or play it.

But sheesh, Free League really knows how to not only scratch that collector's itch, but also make it contagious....

Thinking on it more, and talkin to people in my player pool, I am kind of leaning toward creating a new setting based upon the "sense" and "tone" of ME -- that is, utilizing the elements of Middle Earth that make it such a strong setting without relying on the legendarium. In other words: creating my own world.

Check out Middarkmark for Torchbearer, it might have a bunch of the elements you're looking for.

I still haven't seen my books yet (non-alpha PDF, nor dead tree), not that it matters at the moment. My players reactions to the alpha and my own were jointly at the "F*** this" level. We'll keep the new travel, but nothing else, should we do ME again, and otherwise stick to 1E.
