Blog (A5E) Level Up's Monster Tools

As you may know by now, we’ve done a lot of work with monsters in Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition. Amongst other things we have:
  • Revised the monster math.
  • Changed the Challenge Rating calculations.
  • Added useful tables for each monster, such as names, signs, behavior, lair features, encounters, and more.
  • Created fun new variants for many of the core monsters.
  • Included spells as actions in the stat block to save having to look up extra stuff.
  • Included useful stats like proficiency bonus and maneuver DC.
That’s not all, though. We also want to provide you with plenty of tools to help you devise your own monsters and create balanced encounters.

There looks like several useful tools and thoughts that make using monsters easier and more helpful. I really liked this idea below and look foreword in seeing it in action.

"Those base scores can be modified up and down, and we provide guidelines on what happens when you do that. For example, if you increase a monsters AC by 3 points and want the CR to remain the same, you can reduce its hit points or damage per round by 5% per point of AC."

A long term goal (note — not any time soon!) might be a web tool with sliders which do those things for you as you adjust things up and down.

WHOO and with that one of my main concerns about the limitations of being built on o5e is shattered. A consistent math backbone for monsters should fix so much and make me more comfortable DMing out the gate. Looks like I'm going to be running Curse of Strahd with Level Up since my bestie recently discovered Ravenloft and wanted a game with it, and having the numbers means I can adjust stuff that doesn't appear in the Monstrous Menagerie to be in line with the math :D

I wonder about calculating the challenging rating or XPs reward when they are using "extra help", special items or weapons. Would be a exosuit like a construct work as a monster mount for CR?
