I bother with it because handwaving inventories and encumbrance removes fun from the game, by breaking my immersion. Letting the characters just assume to always be carrying everything they ever found, whenever it's convenient, just feels like sloppy storytelling to me.Why bother? Does it add fun to the game? Not for me and my players. So why track it. In play with respectful players its not going to break anything or even influence it much. If you do have a troll in the group, then make then track everything, weight and volume, and when they don't then use the 1d20 method or even give it a chance that an it me placed inside is lost.
Im looking for something in between. Im not looking to account for everything but I dont want them just putting anything and everything in a bag of holding. Why bother? Does it add fun to the game? Yeah bad story telling would be,I bother with it because handwaving inventories and encumbrance removes fun from the game, by breaking my immersion. We've done the percentile chance for lost items before, and my players really hated it. Passionately and loudly. They made me promise never to use it again.
Yup, agreed.Yeah bad story telling would be,
Player: "Im just gonna pulled this 1972 Lincoln Towne Car out of my bag of holding and drive over these Mind Flayers.
DM: OK great.
Balance is exactly what this threads is all about.Yup, agreed.
I really do see the need to track inventories to an extent, but I also acknowledge that tracking inventory is super-tedious. Every DM has to strike a balance that's right for their table, and I think folks have put forth some pretty good ideas in this thread.
That's fine.No interest in roleplaying Fed-Ex employees and doing transport logistics.
I'd never allow that.Yeah bad story telling would be,
Player: "Im just gonna pulled this 1972 Lincoln Towne Car out of my bag of holding and drive over these Mind Flayers.
DM: OK great.
I'd never allow it either. But I did put a '57 Chevy in a warehouse in Teziir. It was funny but they couldnt use it.I'd never allow that.
However, if you're carrying the Portable Garage variant of the Portable Hole you're good. Rev that sucker up and let's see what it can do!![]()
