D&D General what other monsters can we give subtypes to like dragons but not dragons?

Dragons
Giants
Demons
Devils
Genies
Elementals
Mephits
Archons
Angels
Modrons
Slaadi
"Fey" beings
Elves (8 types I can think of off the top of my head... and always counting)
Lycanthropes (misnomer, but still, they're in the game)
Hags
Trolls
Undead
Yuan Ti

I'm not sure what it is you're looking for. Seems there are, legit, tons of different D&D creatures that are divided into subtypes.

You forgot Yugoloths ;)

Blink Dogs!
  • Blink dog: Natural use of the spell teleport.
  • True blink dog: Natural use of the spell blink.
  • Phase dog: An evil creature with the natural use of the spell blur.
  • Time dog: Natural use of the spell time stop.
  • Shard dog: Natural use of the spell mirror image.

I had a dream once in which I fought a Schrö Tiggers Cat - a fiercesome blinking tiger that pounced around unpredictably and was always displaced within itself. In order to fight it You had to predict where it might pounce next, the problem being that if your predicted correctly then you were already hit, took damage and the Schrö Tiggers would have already moved somewhere else.

For a Gelatinous Ball I was thinking of just adding this as a Bonus Action:

Ooze Ball. The cube changes shape to form a round ball. While in ball form the cube’s speed doubles and creatures can enter its space normally without being subjected to its Engulf ability.

I was originally thinking of changing the cube's speed to 30 ft. and adding some Dexterity points, but it started getting too complicated as the monster became something of a shapechanger like a lycanthrope. The above bonus action seems to work, plus I like the idea of it appearing to be a normal gelatinous cube until it takes the ball form. What a surprise! 🙃

Do you think this changes its challenge rating?

Taking one the bigger, badder classic D&D monsters... what about some different types of Liches?

A Lich that used corrupted Divine magic to achieve immortality in undeath
or variations based on Warlocks or Sorcerers (rather than just wizards)

Different spell casting monsters (or races), for example we already have the Dracolich, but what about a Beholder-lich?

What happens when a Drow becomes a Lich, how does that differ from a human?
(maybe this is getting into more monster-template territory?)

Baelnorn Elfs and Beholder Death Tyrants are already a thing

Demons and devils?
no not extra planer some kind of monster?
What sort of "options" are you looking for, exactly? There are quite a few monsters with subtypes, like goblinoids or werecreatures or oozes.
Do you have a more specific role or theme in mind?
Or are you looking to build a new monster "family" entirely, meant to sit atop the food chain as dragons and giants do?
big guys with connections to something, one passing idea was to make some things subtypes based of schools of magic as an almost arcane embodiment.
Can you clarify what you are asking? I just don't know what the questions is so it is hard to give you an answer / opinion.
see above.
sorry about the late reply I crashed to sleep soon after wards.

OK, is this similar to your giant thread then?

PS Do you like any of the suggestions or comments about those things which already have sub-types?
