RPG Crowdfunding News - The Price of Coal, Herbalist’s Primer, SLA Industries, and More

This week’s article looks at some of the RPG projects on Kickstarter ending between September 9 to 24. This is not a complete listing of all of the RPG-related projects available, just a sampling. I’ll revisit some of this timeframe next week to add in some more campaigns I couldn’t cover here.

The Price of Coal- A Story Game of Labor Rights.png

The Price of Coal: A Story Game of Labor Rights from Unicorn Motorcycle Games
  • END DATE: Wed, September 15 2021 10:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $25 + S/H for the physical copy of the game
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? In the early 1920s, miners in West Virginia fought battles for better working conditions and the right to unionize. Their opponents were the companies that they mined for and the United States government. The battles were an armed conflict to free the miners from inhuman working conditions and an unfair corporate system. The Price of Coal uses that historic backdrop to explore the moment when worker’s rights violently clashed with unregulated capitalism. You play miners and their family and friends. Using card prompts, you will tell the story of why your character joined the insurrection and what they hoped to gain. The story culminates in the real world Battle of Blair Mountain, the decisive confrontation of the rebellion 100 years ago this year. The Price of Coal’s engine uses character and prompt cards inspired by systems such as Red Carnations on a Black Grave, For the Queen, The Quiet Year, and Montsegur 1244. If you want to touch on a largely underplayed piece of history, this game is worth checking out.

But not just any plants, these are magical flora such as screaming mandragoras and shape-shifting nightshade. Each entry shares their culinary (if any), medicinal, and poisonous properties as well as what’s magical about the plants. Check out the campaign page for a downloadable preview to see if this is for you. If you’re looking for greater detail and more lore about the plants in your campaign, this is a good option for any system.

The ENnie Award winning SLA Industries 2nd Edition is back with two new sourcebooks for their splatterpunk sci-fi horror noir RPG. The first book is Threat Analysis 1: Collateral, a 192-page book of NPCs ranging from enemies to allies, each with full stats. Picaresque Roman- A Requiem for Rogues - Japanese Anime TRPG.jpg

Picaresque Roman: A Requiem for Rogues - Japanese Anime TRPG from LionWing Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, September 9 2021 7:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $100 + S/H for the boxed set with multiple books, PDFs, dice, dice tray, cards, and more
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This campaign translates the fifth edition of the Japanese RPG, Picaresque Roman: A Requiem for Rogues, into English. Each player takes the role of a rogue in The City, each hunting the same VIP mark, planning to steal from the whale for themselves. In this game, you compete against each player at the table as well as the VIP. You may form alliances, but only one of you gets to take it all. Worse, one of the PCs is a traitor working for the VIP. If you’re interested in trying this setting and its 2d6 system, the campaign page offers a free downloadable preview.

Crapland 2 - A Surrealist Suburban Troika RPG Book.jpg

Crapland 2 : A Surrealist Suburban Troika RPG Book from Orbital Intelligence LLC
  • END DATE: Thu, September 23 2021 3:01 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Troika
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $60 + $5 US S/H for the PDF and print versions of all three books
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? If you live in the ‘burbs and know what true boredom and surrealism can create, then Crapland 2 is your jam. If that description doesn’t move you, here’s some of the flavor. There’s a damned freeway (not how your father says, “damned freeway”, but how Vincent Price says it), a planetarium full of planets eager to escape, we’re-marts (lycanthrope 7-11s), and so much more. The next issue in the Crapland series, this one clocks in at 70 pages of Troika! goodness. If you’re into random charts and bizarre concepts that take themselves seriously, check this project out.

Stingers & Spores.jpg

Stingers & Spores from Twitchy Butcher Studios LLC.
  • END DATE: Thu, September 23 2021 9:00 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $20 for the PDF and POD versions of the book
  • TRY BEFORE YOU BUY: The jumpstart preview for the game, Stingers & Spores: The Leaping Jaws, and an adventure, Stingers & Spores: Pirates of the Still Sea, are a $1.99 each at DriveThruRPG
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Insects have inherited the Earth and they’ve built buggy civilizations. Using Savage Worlds, this game lets you play as one of 14 insect archetypes among 30 species of bugs with new edges and hindrances. For me, if I were running a SW campaign, this is the book I’d want to use in order to do a mini-adventure in which the players get turned into bugs. Think of A Bug’s Life, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, or DC Comics’Atom type of romp in which your players leave the wider world for the insect one. For me, it’d be a fun sidequest. That said, for the right table, this setting will go over well as a full campaign. If bugs interest you, check this book out.

Good Little Children Never Grow Up - 5e, PF2e, SWADE.jpg

Good Little Children Never Grow Up - 5e, PF2e, SWADE from Sneak Attack Press

  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, Pathfinder 2e, and Savage Worlds Adventure Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $7 for a PDF in the system of your choice
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? A haunted orphanage and trapped kids give your party motivation to do a search and rescue. Originally published for D&D 4e and Pathfinder 1e, this campaign brings the adventure to the current systems. You’ll get 24 player handouts, 4 monsters, a magic item, and more. If this sounds interesting, there’s a review of the original adventure here on EN World.

Although the West Virginia coal wars are an interesting bit of history, they make for a boring RPG. As for Good Little Children Never Grow Up, I think that such horror scenarios are better suited to Savage Worlds than to D&D or PF. It's therefore commendable that a SWADE option is planned.

It strikes me as a good game for a U.S. History class in high school. Have they considered that?
