So you say.
Actually, that is what the D&D design team said.

Specifically:
  1. Other media (books, video games, movie, etc.) is not canon to the TTRPG.
  2. Only the core 3 (PHB, DMG, MM) are canon to 5th edition
We can imply that:
  • Setting books are core for their setting. However,...
  • #2 above probably applies outside that specific setting book
  • You could also take #2 to imply that the setting books are not core at all and that they are just guidelines on how one might play in that setting.

Chris Perkins, not me:

"Fifth edition’s canon includes every bit of lore that appears in the most up-to-date printings of the fifth edition Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master’s Guide. Beyond these core rulebooks, we don’t have a public-facing account of what is canonical in fifth edition because we don’t want to overload our fellow creators and business partners."

No book is "canon" in terms of being binding on WotC or any business partner outside of the core three, let alone older edition stuff. Canon is a convenience for product creation, not a legal system.

Exactly. If Paramount ends up doing an Eberron movie, then I would think that Rising from the Last War would be used as "canon," but other books would not be held to that level.

Livestream is on:
It was not clear in the live stream, but it looks like they have reduced Tiamat's base HP which I expected, but still a little disappointed.

Doesn't Rising and Wayfinder's point you in the direction of older material? Would that not imply that the older material is canon (exept where contradicted by the newer books)?

Like I said it doesn't make sense, alot of stuff was designed to take preexisting lore across editions into account. They didn't think it through, so I decided to just ignore them until they actual put some thought into it.

I mean, it's there as an option, but it's not requires.

They were pretty clear: they aren't spending energy on enforcing any "canon" for business partners like Larian, Paramount or HarperCollins beyond the core three books.
