D&D 5E What is the future of the forgotten realms?

They are saving FR for a return in 6e when it will be outdated with the non-canon 5e stuff from a few years past.

I was surprised by the CR adventure announcement Tuesday. You may be right. I liked how 2E approached things where all setting were equal. IDR if they ever stated a default setting for that edition.

Interesting. I never thought of Eberron as a "do whatever setting."

It has very specific characterizations of races, probably more so than the forgotten realms! And it pushes a different genre (pulp vs. high fantasy) but it definitely, through mechanics and fluff, pushes a fairly specific playstyle.

Exandria, have the book haven't looked at it much so can't comment.

The D&D Movie is coming out in 2023 and is set in the Forgotten Realms. By all accounts they're expecting it to be BIG and are allocating significant resources toward it. Assuming that pans out, it would be VERY foolish to veer away from the Forgotten Realms!

Maybe. I don't get the impression at all, that FR as it was at the start of 5e, and certainly not 3e, is still the setting they want to push.

At least not without some heavy retcons, or awkward insertions of various races or lore.

At which point why bother?

Without the decades or lore, the canon they gleefully want us to disregard what sells FR?

Name recognition with the unplugged population? Sure.

They aren't going to lean into stereotyped tropes, unless they seek to inflame a segment of the online community.

So without that, what is FR?

Nostalgia sells big!

Vibrant setting helps. Novels are still being published, the Magic set is Forgotten Realms. They're pushing it HARD. Unless it stops working for them, they're not likely to stop.

They certainly want to ride the fence and sell nostalgia back to the crowd that grew up on FR.

But that's not the same crowd we keep being told here, they care about more.

Abandon? Absolutely not, they have movies and video games set in the Forgotten Realms in the pipeline.

Because it cannot be sad enough in this discussion.

The upcoming film has the staffing like a film expected to make 100s of millions, for comparison that 2000 film targeted about 100.
There's at least one, probably two, TV show(s) set in the Realms.
There's at least one, probably several more, video game(s) set in the Realms.

Organized play features the Realms primarily.
