D&D 5E An Upcoming 5E Classic Setting in a Brand New Format: The Realm of the D&D Cartoon Show (?)

The evidence?

1) This setting has recently been featured in at least 15 (!) short videos on WotC's D&D facebook feed. If any other Classic Setting had been featured in 15+ official fb posts, folks would be all over it. But maybe people don't immediately think of the Cartoon Show as a "setting."

2) Warduke, Strongheart and friends were featured in Wild Beyond the Witchlight. Besides being LJN Action Figures, the main figures also appeared in the Cartoon Show.

3) The design of the "Mystery Mine" rollercoaster in the Witchlight Carnival (link to map) is modeled after the one seen in the intro sequence of the Cartoon Show. This could serve as the entryway.

The "brand new format" could be a format where you create a character based on yourself.

BTW, there's an official rudimentary map of The Realm: the two sticker books.

I think too many people would raise objections to attempting to quantify yourself in game terms.

Otherwise, using locations and such from the TV show would be great!

Yeah, it would be objectionable if there were, say, IQ charts and real-world weight-lifting charts you're supposed to line up with.

But if they did it freeform: like assign the Ability Scores however you wish...as a fantastic version of yourself...that just looks like you and has your persona, then I think it could work.

So... something to note:

They -could- release the Cartoon Setting as a "Classic Setting". And putting it into a book would -literally- be a Brand New Format for that setting (Since it only ever existed as a Cartoon).

Somehow, though, I think the brand new format is going to be something a little different... Like my previous idea of making it half D&D half Board Game or something.

But who knows! It could be the Cartoon Show as a pop-up-book. Only time will tell!

Well, it does have a bit of game support: the 3.5E adventure from the DVD boxed set.

At one point in high school, I had a plan to get some friends of mine into D&D - I made character versions of them, to try to remove some of the barrier to entry: "you don't need to think of a fantasy character, just act as yourself!"

It quickly dawned on me that I was telling people exactly how charismatic I thought they were. Those character sheets went in the trash fast.

That wouldn't be a "classic setting" (as it was never really developed in print form), but could very well be one of the "new settings" that they are working on.

FWIW, I've played myself as a character twice (high school and graduate school).

In high school, we had "tests" and "tasks" to try to figure out peoples' ability scores. It was fun, a bit silly, and meant to be light-hearted. Frankly, IIRC, we only had a couple 16's (out of 6 players), and less than a handful of 15's even, which in AD&D meant anything less really had little impact on your character.

In grad school, we did a blind-entry system in a program I wrote. Each person rated the other 4 (5 PCs all told), and we averaged those ratings into the scores. Still an AD&D/2E hybrid, so most scores were low enough to not offer any major benefit, but we had a few that were better than before.

Even with my current group, this option has come up for 5E, but we haven't done it yet.

It can easily be done, but people have to be realistic and accept that for the most part--you--and your PC--will be fairly "average". For example, in my present group, I think the worst score would be an 8, and the best a 16 (but only one of those...). At any rate, few people IME can accept being pretty average....

Yeah, nowadays this would be more appropriate. If you used the standard array, for example, and just rated yourself as far as best to worst ability.

For example, for me with a 15,14,13,12,10,8, my best to worst abilities would be:

INT 15
CHA 14
DEX 13
CON 12
STR 10
WIS 8

I am certainly not saying those are my scores IRL, but the order I would rate them in and the score they would be assigned.
