D&D General Vecna and Kas and the Book of Vile Darkness. WotC lore you should know.

Ah, that old chestnut. Never fails to bring a smile to my face. It's a combination of DM fiendishness and players not bothering to think "what happens if I chop my head off?" because they're too busy thinking about that artifact-level power.

Just make sure to put on the head of Vecna immediately when you find it.

I agree, it could very well just be promoting the new season of Stranger Things that debuts this week. My theory is that the being codenamed Vecna is in fact Martin Brenner, but he could just as easily be some entirely new threat.

It might just be cross-marketing for the upcoming Stranger Things season, but it would actually be even more effective cross-marketing if they were to publish something Vecna related in the not too distant future...

I used the Eye of Vecna in my last 5e campaign that finished up a few months ago. It turned out that the party had unwittingly been carrying it around since the start of the campaign. I was pretty proud of keeping that a secret this whole time, while doling out just enough foreshadowing. Wasn't so happy with how the one PC that claimed it at the end decided to roleplay the change to evil, but them's the breaks. I've used artifacts in campaigns before, and most of the time it's gone well. Sometimes you get surprised with which players slip up on the social contract side of things.

John Connor has some interesting speculation.

So, ot strikes me that Vecna comes from many different worlds, and there are a lot of hands and eyes floating about. I wonder if they will do something like the Great Wyrms from Fizban's, with there being different reflections of Vecna from a multitude of worlds. Maybe Vecna simultaneously had his apotheosis on Exandria fighting Vox Machina and with every group who played that old Module?

I am going to tell you a couple of secrets. The first is: really Aoskar, the god of portals presumably killed by the Lady of Pain really was one of the incarnations/variant of Vecna, a failed trick to rewritte the multiverse. A second secret is Azalin Rex, dark lord of Darkon was helped by Vecna to be a tool in a secret conspirancy to take revenge against the Dark Powers. The try to escape caused the fragmentation of the "Core" and the reboot of the demiplane of the dread.

The last things I read about Kas the Destroyer, the vampire is he was a dark-lord in Tovag, Ravenloft setting but later to become a vestige in Dragon Magazine #341 page 69 (I bought that magazine. I loved the article about lesser golems, the paper golem was super-cute).

* The Book of the Vile Darkness is like the Necronomicon (Lovecraft, and Evil Dead) or Darkhold from Marvel universe (let's remember Wanda, the MCU Scarlet Witch before and after reading that dammned book). It is perfect if you want to mix dark-fantasy and horror. Even it could be in a horror movie set in our reality, a wicked version of "isekai" fantasy. Entertaiment-One could produce some horror movie based in Hasbro/WotC's franchises.

* From the monsters from the 3rd Ed BoVD only I miss the kythons. If there is a future sourcebook I doubt we to see a previous UA article about crunch for players. The vashar and jerren are practically almost-identical variants of humans and halflings. Jerren shouldn't be more dangerous than the goblings or gnolls. Even kobolds with a right previous strategy about placed traps can be a worse nightmare.

I feel like they have to getting at something with all the talk of echoes and multiverses.

But if all the they came up with was a Vecna's Guide to Undead, that would be an instant buy for me.

That looks wicked. I love the way the metal moves between clothing and part of his undead body.
